shingles and steroids

Hi does anyone have any advice about coming into contact with shingles whilst on high dose inhaled steroid and low dose alternate day pred.

My son has come into contact with someone with shingles (close contact) and although he has had chicken pox was wondering if it might be a problem.

Anyone have any advice or experience with this.

Hi Koolkat,

Shingles is only infectious if the vesicles are fresh and you come into contact with fluid from them, it's not infectious before the rash appears... and if Jayden has already had chicken pox he *should* in theory have good antibody levels anyway.

Having said that, if I were you I would probably run it by your doctor just to be on the safe side; they may want to do a blood test to check the antibody levels to give you peace of mind for next time that he is immune.

And obviously keep him away from the person until the rash crusts over!

It's one of those things your remember reading about somewhere but can't quite remember what was said.

Jaydens gymnastics coach went home ill on Friday half way through the class with what turned out to be Shingles. As you might expect, supporting somersaults requires some hands on coaching!! Really wasn't sure if this might be a problem - so very thankful for reassurance.
