Cough

Can a cough damage your lungs? Ie if you have a cough continuously that doesnt really go away?

Please dont panic, my consultant is aware i always cough. I am just wondering if it will cause damage in the long run to my lungs with all the coughing i do.

I am sure i read somewhere that each time you cough you burst an air sac is this true?

What happens if you burst lots of these? What damage does it do?

What is the long term affect of lots of coughing?

Cough, splutter

JIngs. I've had a lifetime of coughing and spluttering till I felt about to pass out. Took until beginning of this year, to be formally diagnosed as asthma.

From my history of 'coughing till I'm fit to burst', I'd reckon it did me no serious harm - except from wanting to do serious harm to those folk - sometimes complete strangers! - who thought it hilarious to say 'time you gave up the fags' when I have never smoked in my life. Other non-funny they came out with was 'time you stopped working down the mine'.

I would cough until the sac felt as if they were exploding too which can be blood stained phelgm. It made me throw up sticky phelgm and its worse if it happens in a hospital environment because all the docs and nurses begin to stare. Whilst I keep begging for some sort of cough mecidine I never get. I was told by Docs coughing can wear you out so they like to keep a close eye on you.

However, if you cough now-a-days in public people look at you like you have swine flu or worse.Do you find It makes your chest hurt all this coughing? I am not looking forward to coughing this winter.

It all depends on my cough, it varys from a choking kind to coughing lots of yuk up. Somedays coughing gets me really tired especially when i do it all night and other days it is just pure annoying.I get all the time oh stay away you have swine flu if i walk in to a chemist or even has happened in my GP surgery once very annoying i am like no it is asthma. I also get you have a smokers cough and i am like no i hvae never smoked in my life. It is very annoying. Plumie
