Low calorie munchies?

I'll be starting a short course of pred in the morning & I'm thinking it's not going to have the best of effects on my attempts at eating healthily & losing weight! Anyone have any tips for anything vaguely healthy that I can fill my cupboards & fridge with? (Oh, and suggestions of carrot sticks just ain't going to work!!!)

Celery sticks - you use more calories eating them that it contains.

Sorry tried all the good stuff possible but nothing stops pred munchies like choc and crisps!!!

If your only on a short course it wont make much difference, as the weight gain is a side effect of prolonged use

My problem is when I start stuffing my face it takes me a good while to get out of the habit! (& quite frankly I need very little excuse to start!) I suppose I'll just have to look at it as the perfect opportunity to eat up any unhealthy stuff left in the house & try not to buy any more!

Smoothies did the trick for me - chocolate nesquick with semi skimmed milk, low fat vanilla yogurt (frozen so is like icecream) & some oats. Whacked it in the magic bullet for 10 secs to make the oats dissappear & make it nice & thick & a few chocolate sprinkles (Supercook) on the top. The oats made it filling & the choc gave me what I wanted but its not that calorific as its only really the nesquick powder & a few sprinkles that are a bit fattening! Hope the pred makes you feel better quickly.

snack-a-jacks caramel gotta love them!

oh my mrs coles that sounds fab but a bit too choc for me and sugars any alternatives? strawberry?

HI Wheezyab

Sure you can put in what you like really - its all good. Tescos do smoothie packs in the freezer of ready chopped up fruit - strawberry & banana is really nice but there are mixed berries as well & I forget what else so I suspect the other shops do them. You can use a tiggy bit of apple juice to sweeten it if you can have that & you think it needs it & use light elmlea if thats not too sugary for you instead of yoghurt or just use milk but put more oats in to thicken it up more.

Ooh, the smoothies & Snack-a-Jacks sound good plans, thank you, will stock up on my way home. I've not stood a chance the last 2 days with the amount of chocolate that's appeared in work! (Have zero willpower at the best of times!).

PS Boots have ""Change one thing"" booklets free in store & the lose weight one has a voucher for half price Snack-a-Jacks!

im swearing by the snack a jack popcorn at the mo in both salty and sweet flavours depending on craving (for any on ww its 1 point for salt and 2 for sweet)

Either that or a couple of the small clementine oranges as it takes me so long to peel them(i hate all the white bits) i lose my desire to eat as much !

Mmm! I love caramel snack a jacks too! I also like the salt and vinegar ones!

My other munchies would be the sweet rivita, cereal like cornflakes and rice crispies mixed together, stewed apples.

My treats are weight watchers cakes, milky ways, wotsits and kit kats.

I'm hungry now! :-)

chocolate chip snack-a-jacks are divine. Come in the big packets though and are very moorish.

Fight Pred Munchies with Pickled Onions

If I'm having a major prednisolone induced evening snack attack, then the only way to stop it....is to munch on PICKLED ONIONS. Gross I know, but there's no way I can eat more than 2, & it really puts me off eating anything else. Not a pleasant munchy, but hey it works for me! The problem is...don't ask what I ate before I got to the pickled onion stage....

angela have you tried the choc chip and orange snack a jacks they too come in big packets and are very moorish?

Katherine you kept them quiet!! cant wait go shopping with mum tom!! i see a big bill coming!!!

Weirdly (as I'm a chocolholic) I can't stand the chocolate Snack-a-Jacks - it has to be the caramel ones for me. May have to give the choc-orange ones a try though - just in case!

Hi there,

I feel your pain! I seem to spend more time on pred than off it and am also a dancer so I can't afford to put on any weight at all- I'm a size 10-12 but most of the other girls are a 6-8- grrrrr!

My personal favourites are :

*pink and white marsh mallow thingeys- about 50cals each and very jummy

*thin dark and mint chocolate- I keep it in the car so i really have to want some to go and get it out! oh and suck it.

* 'Skinny Cow' ice creams- amazingly low in fat and cals

* sugar free jelly- a bit unsatisfying by itself so i put canned fruit in it (not pineapple- it wont set!)

*Soup- i make a huge batch every week in my blender and if i'm hungry have a bowl-fills you up

* As carrot sticks aren't for you, dips like low fat humous with baked pitta bread?

hope this helps,

SX

A friend told me that peeling a ripe banana and putting it in the freezer (wrap it in cling-film first) makes it taste like banana icecream without the fat, if you eat it straight from the freezer - and do the same with grapes and they taste like sweeties if you eat them frozen. Haven't tried them myself yet, but both sound like they're worth a go!

choc orange ones good tho not seen them in tesco. got mine in somerfield. just enough choc chips on and the orange kick keeps them not sickly or too sweet. hope you got some andrea only found them self b4 went into hospita; other week so took packet with me.

Try a fresh mackrel fillet baked in oven for 20mins. Cheap and tasty and filling if you eat with flavoured cous cous.

try some light crackers with some houmous, always fills me up when i have the munchies, plus its good for you too

failing that, raisens
