Steroid tablets for almost 2 year old

Hi There,

My almost 2 year old was today diagnosed with a chest infection, and has been prescribed antibioitics and pink dissolvable steriod tablets. My other 2 children have asthma, and the doctor now thinks that my daugther has aswell.

This is where I am after some advise....

I dissolved the 3 tablets in a small amount of water. She refused to drink the water. I eventually managed to get the water into her, by using a syringe, squirting it bit by bit into her mouth. This took ages and was not very nice for either of us as I had to hold her down.

Does anyone have any tips about how to get the water into her easier? She doesn't drink fruit juices so I wasn't able to disguise the taste! The pharmacist said that i shouldn't dissolve it in milk.

I have got 2 more batches of 3 tablets to give her and am dreading it!

Thanks in advance.

Jenny

Hi, sorry to hear your daughter is unwell, unfortuently I don't have any tips to make things easier when giving the steriods. My daughter has just turned 2 and gets these quite regulary, the only advice I can give is what you've already done, i disolve 4 in a little bit of water so its more like a paste and use a syringe to administer them, my daughter hates it, seemingly tastes awful and she gags everytime and has been known to vomit but they really do help so its a must to give them. Try a small amount at a time in the side of her mouth giving a drink in between, i'm like you and dread each time as I have to hold her down which is upsetting.

Good luck and I hope she's better soon:)

i remember once my little brother went to Aand E. he was so ill they suspected meningitis (especially as my dad almsot died of that) but it turned out to be just a really bad ear infection. im not sure what the med was exactly, but something to be dissolved and then drunk. they (and later we) gave it to hime in a cup of coca cola. he drank this down qiuite happily, as we dont usually ever have this, so it was a real treat for him. with pred i would advise you to use diet coke, and no caffeine for kids? hope this might help...also, the fizz can mask any remaining fizz from the dissolved med...

Hi Jenny

I dissolve them in the smallest amount of water possible and give them via a straw (however, my daughter was 4 when she first had them), with a drink on standby and a treat to take the taste away, apparently they taste disgusting. Chocolate works a treat in our house as this is never allowed in the morning. Has your child got a favourite toy? If so they could also have their medicine at the same time, apart from that I would try syringing to one side of the mouth and stroking their throat in theory they will then swallow.

Hope it gets easier for the next 2 days and your little one is soon better.

Thanks everyone for your advice.

We were able to administer the last dose of steriods today (HOORAY).

In the end we managed to get her to take it by adding fruit juice to the dissolved tablets. She then sipped the medicine off, bit by bit, and with a lot of encouragement.

Hope we won't need them again too soon

my son had to take steroids to test if he was asthmatic, I' m sure he had them in powder form, if I remember it had a flavour as well.

hi when our daughter had her first dose of pred we were told to give it in a little dilute fruit juice she promptly spat it out so we cunningly hid the same mix in and empty fruit shoot type bottle i cant say she was happy but it certainly went down a bit better with most off it going down the right way
