I today was told after waiting since January that I do not qualify for disability living allowance.
Even though I lost my job due to ill health in December.
To say I'm disappointed is an understatement

Sorry to hear your disappointing news, maybe when the initial reply sinks in you might want to ask what to do next. It is not unusual to be refused at first and its quite common to have to appeal on more than one occassion. I know it seems harsh but I lost my job from health three times before I got DLA and was accepted as disabled, so I speak from experience plus the new rules are even more complex. You have my best wishes if you decide to go further but it won't be an easy path. Good Luck
Sorry to hear that Fantasy; any chance (pref. with help from Citizens Advice ) that you could go for an appeal/review? All the best , don't give up x
Hi lovelight,
Yes,it's possible I suppose, just don't feel that you can get anywhere with these people.
Once they have decided its no,that's it.
But thanks for the advice.
X
Don't take that decision as set in stone Fantasy3, you have the right of appeal and should go for it ! As lovelight says, it will be best if you can get a benefits adviser on board to help you through the appeal process. Your local authority may have one so check them out on the web
Good luck ! and ...
keep on keeping on
Do you have a One Community center close by? If so ask them for help in filling in the form for an appeal. I'm not implying that you didn't fill it in correctly but they know the kind of language that the DLA are looking for.
Good luck.
Hi Fantasy3
I am sorry to read this news, however it dosen't mean the decision is the right one! Approx 45% of people who appeal DLA have the decisions overturned, try not to feel too disheartened. Please call us on 03000 030 555 and we can help you with this.
Cheers
Jo
Hi, I too was told I wasn't eligible for DLA as I could dress myself and warm up a meal. I went into hospital re a lung transplant and the social worker there filled the form in for me. I received DLA a month later. It is all very well them saying we can do things but do they realise how long it takes us! Good luck. Susie
Many thanks for all your comments.
I do suppose I am quite able bodied compared to some.
I can dress myself, wash, cook, clean my home.even walk to the bus stop.(albeit slowly) and having to sit and get my breath when I get there, but I can do it.
I may just not bother reapplying for dla.
There are many more people who are far worse off than myself.
I should consider myself lucky.
Love to all,take care.
Xx
Dont give up. Best wishes.
I have an apt with the local CAB office on friday to help me fill in my new claim form, I don't hold out much hope, but I do know if I get knocked back I will appeal as I know quite a few people with various disabilities that have had to go down that road, yes it,s a pain in the butt & a waste of a damned sight more money than they are saving, but who are we to argue with the powers that be, the daft burgers must be far more intelligent than us, they see sense in the end, so don't give up just yet. good luck xx
Hi silly sorry i,m late in on this but your better of using welfare as against cab, they have the dla bible, the book of answers the dla give their decision on, i to got knocked back on several occasions, one phone call, one home visit and three weeks later, full dla, 18 months back pay, thanks to welfare rights.
I have been turned down as well so am going to appeal,,,armed with letters from all who deal with me,,i have AGE UK doing mine,,and they are brilliant,,carry on and appeal,,get the dr,s and consultants to write letters and appeal,,yes it is hard going,,but like to think there is a light at the end of the tunnel
Very good advice from all above,, dont think i can add any more except,,,dont let it and them grind YOU down,,,,,,,,,,,,,
Hi Fantasy3,
I am sorry to hear you got turned down. I was turned down the first time I applied, the second time I applied too and the third time I applied. I then applied a 4th time and got turned down, I appealed and go turned down and appealed again and went to a tribunal and still lost, so appealed the tribunal and finally after 3 years I was awarded it Indefinitely. So please don't give up the fight.
They are making it even harder now as they are making new claimants go for a face to face medical value to see whether the person is in need DLA. Oh and as of today it will be known as PIP well from further up North and some parts of London I think. Anyways, good luck Fantasy3
Lynda.
Please folks get your local welfare rights officer involved, you wont regret it, i did
DlA couldn,t refuse payment without dreaking their own rules, if they insist you go for an independent medical, insist they re-emburse you travel expenses or provide transport themselves, also that you can take someone with you to be present at your examination ad an independent witness. I got my sugery nurse to go with me. ( with my gp's permision, he hates to be over ruled by some jumped up government lacky as he cslls them) guess who cacelled their apointmnt once informrd who would be accompanying me.
The answers you give on the application form maybe correct but are not worded as they like to see them. That was the advice I was given when I applied.
Get an expert to go through any form you fill in to ensure that things like 'good days' read 'better days'. Providing you fit in each of their criteria you should be successful. There is no doubt they are correctly weeding out false claims but unfortunately some genuine claims are being treated harshly as they try to sort good from bad.
Hi Fantasy, sorry you feel down about this but it is usual to be knocked back the first time. Your first port of call should be your GP, if he/she is behind you then appeal. Also do you have a One Stop Shop near you, I used the Welfare dept in our One Stop Shop and they were wonderful. They told me exactly what help I should go for, i.e. copy Consultants letters to my GP, letter of support from GP and as much information as I could find about my incapacity. In my case they thought I would be better after an operation, this did not cure the problem so now I have to apply 12 monthly. Its a real pain, but do not let it get you down. Take care and good luck with your appeal, Maximonkey
I'm so grateful to each and every one of the replies, thank you.
I am not going to take no for an answer,I've decided.
I lost my job through ill health, and I should be reimbursed for it.
I know a couple of people that claim dla fraudulently, and it really annoys me when genuine claimants like myself get turned down.
Thank you all.
Xx
Keep trying
Maxi monkey, what on earth is a one stop shop please?.
I'm sure we don't have one,but if we do then I shall definately be using it.
Many thanks
