Excuse my ignorance what is Alpher 1 I have never heard of this and want to learn more, it's only six months since I was told moderate copd. There is still much that I do not understand, hoping that will change here with more experienced members passing on what they have learned.

It's a genetic form of copd.

How do they test lungs for genetic copd, have a strong dislike of operations, having two sons would have to know if there is a part of this genetic.

Just a simple blood test.

I will ask my GP if he can refer me for a test, soonest. Will this alter the way copd is treat should anything be found, could be worrying without reason here but have a need to know.

A think its emphasema a know thay do genetic test for that no thay just band most lung problems as copd ... Few years ago thay would give proper name of condition's but now its very vauge

It sounds like it could be alpha -1 antitrypsin deficiency, but you would need to check this.

Take care.

its Alpha 1 Antitrypsin deficiency.(Bronchiectasis-lack of a certain enzyme in the lungs).Mine is hereditry and my children have been tested for it.my two nephews have it so has my younger brother. Its not always hereditry,my friend has it due to having pnuemonia and TB when she was a child. The name COPD covers a wide range of lung complaints. Not just emphesemia.Hope this info is helpful to you.x
