Copd, under active thyroid and rhinitus .are they all making the other worse .....

Have just been told by a nurse that the cough I have all the time is actually caused by rhinitus, and not the copd that I have.she informed me that I need a nasal spray which would elliviate the cough ! ! ! Always thought my copd caused the cough, any info on if this is right would be helpfull.

did you develop the rhinitis after your copd was diagnosed? Just a thought because hubby suddenly started with this about 2 years ago and nothing helped until our physio suggested it may be food causing a problem. GP would not sanction food intolerance testing so we paid to have it done and it came back as dairy and pineapple. Changed over to soya and he seems 99.9% better, Good luck,

Hi, I have had perennital rhinitis for 17 yrs (have been taking loratadine every day since) and have had a constant cough or feeling or needing to clear my throat for the last 5 yrs (since i had pleurisy), I've now got to go for a copd test next week.i also have used nasal sprays with no effect on the cough. My doc did say it could be habitual however cos its been going on for so long. I was diagnosed with an underactive thyroid 10 years ago and must admit its been difficult getting that right .... not sure if this helps, but it could be either the rhinitis or the copd, praps you need to badger your doctor into doing more tests, either way dont let him/her fob you off ;)

Thank you for your reply,I suppose we always think doctors know best, beginning to learn different now.asked my local pharmisist about rhinitus today and he said I haven't got it and see the GP.why can't someone just be honest instead of saying this n that ?

Thanks for your reply :)

your welcome :D I hope you get to the bottom of your cough sooner rather than later :D Just my personal opinion but I think sometimes GP's just aren't knowledgable enough about specific medical problems. And it's the luck of the draw if you go see a Doctor who has specialised in whatever it is you go see them about ;)

HI Jambo

I started with severe post nasal drip/rhinitis about 6 years ago. (Before I knew I had COPD)

It got so bad I couldn't go into town because I was choking on the mucus in my throat and couldn't spit it out. I coughed so hard I would vomit huge amounts and It also was getting on my chest. I also couldn't sleep at night for having to cough and spit it up. I felt I was drowning.

I was exhausted. finally, my Dr gave me a leaflet on GERD and nasal mucus.

He doubled my Lanzerapole to 60mg a day (Only for a short course.) and Gaviscon 4 times a day, after meals. I wasn't to drink anything after the last dose to coat my throat.

I thought it was nonsense but, it calmed it right down. I was especially relieved that the exhausting coughing stopped.

I only use the Fluxanase every morning now and just have normal Perrenial Rhinitis that rarely wakes me up coughing anymore. I also try to drink more water which keeps the mucus thinner.
