As the rate of female smoking matched the males consequences are lung cancer and copd will also match male rates of disease. A desperate need for more funding of research and care is highlighted in these statistics.
Well Tallyman, what can be done then? How can we help to raise the profile?
Keeping what funding there is when cutbacks are everywhere, reminds me of this blog on funding blf.healthunlocked.com/blog... keeping the same profile may be the most we can hope for. Sorry for sounding negative there is little good news that lifts the spirits on this subject.
Can I suggest, as I have before, that those of us with COPD could do more to help. I have offered to volunteer, I am a fee paying member of the BLF and I donate to them. I think we all need to think differently to the old 'they should do something about it' view.
Millstone, the research company that Prof Barnes has set up to look at potential treatments I think is a private company, so may not be affected by cutbacks. And I do think we can all play a role in encouraging an increase in awareness.
Talking of profiles made me think of charity donations. Type in " lung " in the search box at the bottom of the list. A little yellow circle will appear on the globe. Hover your mouse over it. Sad to say the BLF is way down the bottom.
Oh my my Puff! I guess being wheezy is just not as eye/ear catching as some other charities eh?
I have no objection to Children's charities gaining more donations than Lung research but i as I pointed out at the start of this blog, more women die from COPD than from breast cancer and that group has done wonders!
I do always try to bring the BLF to peoples attention, but can't run a marathon to raise funds, and will be lobbying my MP anyway! -)
