Hi Yes ... Was Not Pacifically Aimed At You @Music What I Meant To Say Is All Confusing
Points I Raised Are Valid ..... My Sats Are Up Down And Now Have Pains In My Lung Worry Is How Much Good Lung Al Have Left
As Others Have Said About Kidney's You Know When Things Are Bad When It Effects Your Kidney And You Need Pee And Nothing Happens
Hi again, not sure if I understand your post. The other day you said the doctor said you had copd, the nurse said you had emphysema and someone you know you said you can't have emphysema because your sats (oximeter results) are good. But today the nurse has said you don't have emphysema? COPD is either bronchitis or emphysema, or a combination of both. To me, the word "moderate" would not have been used to describe just bronchitis, but I could be wrong. Many people have perfectly normal sats yet have any stage of emphysema. Some people with emphysema don't have good sats and benefit from oxygen, those with good sats don't. I have severe emphysema but always have good sats. I personally don't like the term copd as it often leaves people unsure of their exact condition, I don't know what's so hard about telling people what they are suffering from! I think you need to speak to your gp again to ascertain exactly what you have. Hope this helps! Libby
hi libby hope your feeling ok today and yes thats correct it was the person who done the spirometry test on me said i have mild emphysema but peak flow was good and pulse oximetry good ( thing they put on tip of my finger ) has i nearly had to beg her to tell me because had to wait long enough for the test and did not want to wait another 4 days to be told by my GP.
Then my GP told me i had this moderate COPD but when i spoke to someone from BLF they told me i could not have enphysema if my pulse oximetry is normal i know it sounds confusing but thats what happend and what made it bad i had never even heard of COPD what i have.
Hi Music, I'm not a nurse and certainly not a doctor, but I have severe emphysema and always have good sats, as do many people that visit this site, likewise there are people whose emphysema is not severe who don't have good sats. There have been many questions about this subject in the past and it's evident there are many variables. I think you should phone the helpline again as one thing I am sure about, good sats are not necessarily an indication of the severity of emphysema. Libby
i find this very disturbing, i've got emphysema but my sats are mainly 95-98 with the occasional drop to 92. now after reading this i'm sat here worrying bout my sats. wish someone would come with something definitive.
also am not keen on the term copd. I have the combination. Chronic Bronchitus with the main part of my disability being emphysema. I tend to say to people I am on oxygen because of emphysema, not because of copd. As to the posters comment about blood oxygen saturation. I do not know of anyone with moderate emphysema that has a 98%. Have you tried walking and then seeing what the sats are? With emphysema they drop on exercise. With people that do not it will stay the same, even when breathless. Mine if I take the oxygen off will drop to 78% just going up the stairs. Which is of course dangerous over time as the heart will then race like mad to try and compensate, the liver and kidneys will also be unhappy.
When I had mild and moderate copd my saturation levels would of course have been better when resting, and not dropped as much during exercise. I would way with sats of 98% you would have very mild emphysema. To know if you have copd you would have lung function tests at your local hospital. Then you would be told your FEV1 and what that means. For example moderate or whatever. Without them lung function tests the doctor cannot comment on what if any stage you have. Sorry for the ramble.
I thought a spirometry was for a lung fungtion test and my fev1 was 2.67 going by the print out i have in front of me has what i ask my docter to do also is saying results are suggestive of moderate COPD
think its all confusing
Hi Derrylynne, checking back through my community matron folder, I see my resting sats are always in the range of 94-98 yet I have severe emphysema, lung function tests around 5 years ago showed I had 24% lung function and I was living a fairly normal life back the, working, etc. I am far worse now, can do very little and use a wheelchair to go out. My nurse will never take my sats or bp until I've fully recovered from answering the door to her, I think she doesn't want to scare me! Because my sats are always good, oxygen therapy is of no use to me. Libby
according to the gold classification you are moderate, scroll down this link and check the table out
mines 60 so i'm moderate too, i do struggle to do some things, can't walk and talk at the same time, only walk at snails pace. getting upstairs is hard somedays but when i'm good i'm ok
hi stitch sorry if i have mislead but twice i have ask that and been given the same answer has was not sure if i heard right the first time
i dont know what you mean when you say sats are good at rest, how can you tell
sorry but this is so new to me and i am not on oxegen yet
