That must have been quite a shock for you podmore :( but let me reassure you that there is still plenty of life to be lived if you take control of your health now you can slow down the progression of this condition, or even halt it.

I would suggest giving the BLF Helpline a call and chatting it over with them :)

Hi Podmore

To try to reassure you lung age really dosen't have anything to do with severity or prognosis - it is mostly used to encourage people still smoking to quit and to reinforce the benefits of not smoking. It really dosen't have any medical or diagnostic benefits.

We have lots of information here on COPD or if you would like to chat things over please feel free to call us on 03000 030 555.

Best Wishes

Jo

I have repeatedly read that once you stop smoking, the lung function you subsequently lose year on year is no more than anyone who does not have lung disease or does not smoke. Look at those who are above 90, still living and more importantly, still breathing

Try not to worry

Hi, my lung age was put at 104 (or may have been 107, what's 3 more years?!!) 4 or 5 years ago. I didn't actually manage to stop smoking until 3 years ago and there was an immediate improvement. However, emphysema does continue to worsen but so long as you stay off the cigs and look after your heath, its progress should slow down dramatically so's you'd hardly notice. There's a link here to NHS Choices that will give you information and gives you other links for further information.

Keep well, make sure any exacerbations/infections are treated quickly and you'll still be visiting this site in another 40 years! Libby

thank you lovexx

Hi Podmore,

I wouldnt worry about lung age - mine are 30yrs older than me making them 82 but i am quite active and still manage 13km in 30mins every night on my exercise bike. Just keep active and stay within your limits and you should be ok

Take care
