I know that when I'm short of breath I have to keep stopping when eating so I can take a few good breaths then carry on as I struggle to breathe and eat at the same time. You find yourself trying to eat a mouthful quickly, to swallow it, and then give yourself indigestion or hiccups.

I often have problems with a blocked nose though. I can only just breathe in through it, but not out. That was down to Polyps, which I had removed years ago but have never been 'right' since.

Worth mentioning to your COPD nurse or doctor though.

Sound advice Gordon :)

I Have Same Problem .. Well Hiccups Are Bad When I Go Out Too .... But I Think Its Better Than Acid ..... Have Looked My Self On Tin Ta Net And Do Need To Make Sure You Chew Your Food Properly

Don;t Now If Stomach Flap That Causes Acid Is Responsible For Hiccups ... But I Know You Need To Keep Well Hydrated In Order To Help Your Body Remove Mucus Phlegm .... That Might Be Question To Ask BLF

Hi Jackie50

Hiccups can be a real pain and can be caused by different things.

It may be worth just taking note of how you breathe when you eat, it could be you are taking in more air with each mouthful.

Reflux may also cause hiccups, symptoms can be heatburn symptoms, this burning sensation can happen after certain 'trigger' foods and can be worse when lying flat, but sometimes you may not even know you have it. GP's can prescribe medication to ease this - i would suggest having a chat with your GP.

I hope this helps.

Jo

I find that sipping water through a meal helps me a lot. Though I now avoid a favourite bread as it is too dry.

Like Juliekay, Pete has to drink whilst eating or anything can set him off choking. Food gets caught in the mucus in his throat so he has to be so careful. One day he can eat bread and be fine whilst the next day it will cause him to choke. We went into House of Fraser this morning and Pete started choking because of the strong smell of perfume! Anything can set him off. xx
