Hi all does anyone know what sort of foods Are best for someone with Emphysmea I can not eat and breath at the mo and finding it hard what to eat . any advice please . Thanks

Soft foods are best that take minimal chewing. Try some chunky soups or omelettes, slow cooked meats are tender, my favourite being lamb hocks. Do not forget your fruits either, canned fruit tends to be soft. Your appetite will get better as time goes on, mine did. Eat a little and often, 6 little meals is easier than two or three large ones. Use large plates instead of small ones, it doesn't look so much or intimidating as a small plate piled high.

Thank you2greys has not thought of tin fruit I do use a large plate at meal times . I am finding all this so strange . Only had Emphysmea since Nov 16 and it is stage 3 and each day I seem to be getting worse .

And mornings are the worst sinuses draining down coughing so mucus can come up my coughing gets so intense that sometimes I vomit and at this point I'm sure this is the END

its i bit of a battle when you get to feeling like you are now..i know as it was not that long ago that i was feeling the same as.you are now.

i found cold canned fruit with carnation mike a life saver..drinks also helped me..not water as it was now tasteless and did nothing to stimulant my sences that badly needed waking up. home made juices and smoothies..soft fruit like water melon, strawberrys and bananas was always there for me but i still needed to push myself to eat them.

i had to also push myself to do a few breathing exercises every few hours.

i put it all down to my new life with Copd and my body making the changes that come with the with it.

i think it lasted for a couple of months but i did not lose any weight so i new i was doing the right things to stay as strong and not to make my illness worsen.

I know the feeling I'm down to 80 pounds cause of eating is more of a job but found out it makes you weaker and then when you feel like eating you just don't have the strength to fix anything it's an endless battle for me then when I eat I immediately need to nap

I was given a diet sheet at the PR class. This was essentially the reverse of normal diets sheets. In addition to 2greys post they said to use full fat milk for porridge and custard. Plenty of protein too, fish is easier than meat and there are plenty of pulses that are a good source of protein. I use a hand blender to make delicious veg soup, easy to do, yummy and stacks of veg. Avoid processed food and watch sugar and salt content.

I forgot about fish, oily fish like Mackerel,Herring and Salmon are rich in Omega 3 Fatty Acids, a vitamin D3 source. These are very good for your health and boost your immune system.

Also add dried milk powder to full fat milk Boosts the calories use in porridge mash potatoe and smoothies take care

Mashed potato is my favourite, with things like minced beef and gravy. So easy to eat. Or try eating little but often. I find a large meal puts me off by just looking at it.

I have a good appetite (too good ;) ) so no problem with eating in that sense - but I do have issues with what I eat. Toast, crackers, biscuits, rice etc. are increasingly a problem as I accidentally breath in at the wrong moment and 'inhale' crumbs or grains. This usually triggers a harrowing coughing session of the sort where my eyes are practically bulging and streaming with tears until the offending particle suddenly shoots out of my mouth and across the room! Worse still is when I have unknowingly inhaled food without realising and then have a bewildering and sudden violent coughing fit hours later only for a bit of sweetcorn from last nights dinner to shoot out. I tend to avoid such foods now though I still like toast - I just have to make sure that I really pay attention while I eat it. I think these food inhalation problems become more likely with severe/v.severe COPD. I'm sure I'm not the only one experiencing this.

Problem is I have type 2 diabetic high blood pressure artery disease so my eating is very limited I do eat alot of potatoes with butter and cheese Dr said he just wants me to gain
