So I'm currently under investigation for asthma and/or bronchiectasis so no definate diagnosis yet.

I was wondering if anyone ever gets more phlegmy in throat/top of chest not long after eating meals? Broncs or asthmatics.... Or any other.

Thanks

Lee

Hi Lee I am a Bronch and Asthma sufferer and I get like that when I drink and eat. It is a nightmare clearing your throat all the time. My ventolin pump helps but I need about 6 puffs to make a difference. Exactly how you describe.

Hi patsy, thanks for your reply. Yes it's very annoying, I find myself constantly clearing my throat after eating and sometimes drinking. Do you know if this is the asthma or bronc? Or something else.

My doctor said it could be acid reflux which I have but as I get a bit of sinus trouble I am wondering if it’s nasal drip. When I see him next I will ask him that question.

Id be very interested to find out what he says 😁

How long have you had asthma and bronc?

I had asthma about 25 years ago and was diagnosed bronc 8 years ago but suspect I have had it for much longer, it just got out of control and I had a good gp who referred me to a consultant. It can be difficult to diagnose, so I am told. I will try and remember to let you know what he says it is 😊

Thank you very much. How is your bronc, if you don't mind me asking?

It is stable at the moment but could change at any moment as I have pseudomonas if I send in a sample and they test it for antibiotics and none can help like my last one I have to go in hospital for 10 days iv antibiotics. I try to keep away from anyone who has an infection so am now protected apart from any items which come in the house which I clean. If I get ill I just ring the consultants secretary to tell her I am sending a sputum sample in take antibiotics till they call me. This has taken years to put in place but I suppose I am at that stage now.

Have you had any tests yet to diagnose bronc? Ct scans blood tests etc

I have had a CT scan, yes. It was reported as early bronc otherwise clear chest. I work in a hospital and have a good relationship with the radiologists. So I asked 2 other radiologists to have a look, and they both disagreed with bronc, so 1 said early, 2 said no bronc. I haven't seen my consultant yet because of the covid situation. I'm hoping it's not bronc and just asthma. 🤞

Lee I had one ct scan and it said I didn’t have it and further down the line I had a thorax ct scan which said I did.

Did you know what kind of CT scan you had the 1st time? Unless significant enough, bronc can only be seen on a high resolution CT (HRCT). Also how far apart were your CT scans?

My first was a normal HRCT Scan. 2nd I had an X-ray it showed I had pneumonia and then had the thorax ct scan which is die injected which was clear I had bronch. These were done a couple of years apart.

How unusual. When I said I work in a hospital, I'm a radiographer, meaning I'm the guy who does the scan. HRCT scans are the corner stone for diagnosing bronc. Your 1st CT won't have been sensitive enough to pick up the bronc unless the bronc was significant hence why it was "missed". Contrast CT isn't used for bronc specifically but can pick it up if it's advanced enough (meaning the bronchioles are wide enough). My scan was a HRCT which is the most sensitive for bronc, which is dividing opinion at the moment.

Hi Lee, I have bronchiectasis and I found that sometimes during or just after a meal, mucous seemed to move right up into my throat. It was easy to cough it up when this happened.. However, I decided to ask my consultant why this was. His response was, it was quite common in bronchi sufferers but couldn't offer any real reason why this happened. At least you are not alone!

Cheers, Chrys 😊

Hi oshgosh, thanks for your reply. I don't know much about ILD, do you think it's because of that, or your asthma?

Thanks

Hi, I have had asthma since childhood which is now very controlled, but five years ago developed a persistent cough and phlegm. Referred to a Lung Function clinic for tests and CT scans and then onto a gastro unit. Diagnosed with a hiatus hernia in the mucous membrane. Hyper sensitivity exasperated by reflux was causing the cough so prescribed a proton pump inhibitor which didn’t stop the cough and phlegm. Finally my Doc tried me with a maintenance dose of azithromycin. 3 months in and my cough and phlegm has disappeared and I’m blowing 600-650 Peak Flow consistently 👍
