Yes I do but I don't know if it is copd related or old age, I'm 61.
Hi Gilly,
Its kind of got me stumped lol, you find something new most weeks with this disease lol
My muscles seem to have disappeared - could be old age (69) or the fact I no longer do household chores eg cook, clean, wash windows, garden etc. Have to admiit my exercise is a bit sporadic........... Perhaps one of the other pundits can advise us?

Hi, I have suffered muscle wastage, I'm 49, due to COPD. This relates to reduced physical activity. I do do exercises to try and minimise the wastage.
Take care, Richard
Hi Richard,, im very active and exercise regularly, so its a bit strange, but thank you for the reply, and likewise take care
Read your medicine leaflets. Symbicort and Seretide can cause muscle cramps and Spiriva can produce muscle pain.
Auntymary
I never thought of that, last time i read them was 2 years ago
cheers aunty
I'm 62 and reasonably active. Physically, except for my lungs, I'm the same as I have been for a few years. I do get the odd cramp in maybe a thumb or finger once in a while which has only started recently. I would see your doctor as it does seem a bit odd.
Hi Muckster.
Not good news I'm afraid.
I have pretty late stage COPD & one of the most upsetting parts of that has been watching my physical strength disappear progressively over the years such that now I can barely carry e.g. a 3 litre coke bottle.
The more serious results are that my wife has to do the things I used to do, putting out the bins, carrying the shopping bags, stuff like that. Not only does that wear her out cos she's not in the best of health but it makes me feel bad too.
And no more DIY - I need to find a "no job too small" type handyman to do the little repairs I used to do.
I went on a pulmonary rehabilitation course in August/September last year which included exercises. At the end the relevant nurse told me to stop exercising because my blood oxygen levels (SAT^S) dropped too low.
So it seems that this stage of reducing strength is an inevitable part of the damned disease.

I don't know what stage I am with COPD but I do recognise the muscle problems. I was diagnosed with the disease about 6 years ago and I am just over 80. I have quite severe loss of muscle tone in my legs and also suffer cramp in legs, hands and midriff. Don't know whether this is age or the disease but I suspect it i a mixture.
How come my legs get thinner in proportion to my belly getting bigger, it must be to do with my centre of gravity moving to balance me.
Muscle cramps seem to be very common with COPD could be to do with steroid in the medications.
Who set your exercise program me? Get a MOT on what you are doing for exercise.
Exercise programme ask your GP to refer you to a physio to check that your exercise is correct for you? There are physios who have advanced training in helping COPD patients. Listen to the experts ,ask to do pulmonary rehab ,when you finish this, try BLF active. Contact the BLF to find out more,
I have been looking at a leaflet about healthy diet and it struck me that it mentions lowlevels of potassium causing muscle weakness. Could have something to do with it perhaps? Worth having a look at. As to the cramps I have been having them since my late 20's and used to be given actual quinine but these days it is quinine sulphate.
How about a chat with your gp/consultant?
