Hello Vicvin, there are lots of sites that will tell you a lot about copd, I lke the 'breathless' site which was set up by a man called John Kirtley. The first signs I suppose are being short of breath ( sob ) always coughing up mucus ( sputum ) fatigue,,, if you feel something isn't quite right please get yourself off to the doctors. You might be sent for an x-ray first and maybe a spirometry test,I do hope you havent got it, here is the link to the site " Breathless". All the best for 2013 to you,Carol.
Unfortunately, I do not think the site mentioned is accurate in its information. The definition of chronic and the diseases covered by the term COPD spring to mind immediately. My thoughts only, decide for yourself. Take care, Richard
en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chron... This site might be more up to date, but maybe a little alarming, what looks like a picture of a Christmas pudding on the right is actualy a lung!
My husband was recently diagnosed and has none of the usual symptoms. He was only tested because I (with COPD) told his doctor that I felt his breathing at rest was too loud and laboured. In the past he was a heavy smoker, but hasn't smoked for years (he would not be my husband if he did......). So the only thing you can do is to get a diagnosis from your GP. Some of the sites can be misleading, and although I don't consider my COPD a bad case, the scenarios they give are scary.
I keep mentioning the information pack issued by NHS Sheffield to their own staff as being a good source of information - sheffield.nhs.uk/respirator...
As people keep saying - there are some very scary sites out there that could give you nightmares. NHS Choices have a shorter set of pages you can look at - nhs.uk/conditions/chronic-o...
Nobody has mentioned the information provided by the BLF yet, so I will. It is very good.

Hello Vicvin , I would say COPD is an umbrella term for a number of chronic conditions.
I found this site gave a very good explanation ...
So my friends,I have had a rather heartening occurance today,I have been on my own for 3.5 weeks (scary when you have no others to sound the alarm bells) and of course I have missed my wife and daughter,(more than I care to admit) and now they will be back shortly,So the point is: they have had a break from us (me) grumpy old characters, how about we give them a real heartfelt back home? welcome! After all we are not the only ones on the Planet who need a rest from our problems!
And now,at onetime I used to be Mr Perfect,so I can now admit to you, this was the dream of youth, and I don't care what you think of me,and that in a nutshell is what getting old is all about.Odd really is'nt it our parents spend so much time educating us to us to be the perfect human being,so everyone will think well of you,and then you end up like me,and don't give a toss!
