Hello Meg

Excuse me if you have heard this all before I don't know the severity of your Asthma. Asthma doesn't have to be a jail sentence, and I really do understand how isolating it can feel, going through my own difficulties right now. It is really important that you understand your triggers, wind, rain and the cold are real buggers for sensitive airways. Wearing a cotton scarf with no lint on it (don't want that stuff making your already sensitive airways worse) over your mouth and nose is helpful. Always whether at home or out and about have a copy of medication, your medical diagnosis, GP details and hospital details on your person. The little green men with the big yellow taxi love an organised Asthmatic. Always have a mobile phone with you when out, and don't be afraid to use it and call 999 better a breathing Asthmatic than a dead one. If you are out and about and struggling don't let it get worse by struggling on, take a rest break and if necessary seek the assistance of a fellow human, enter a shop or any other business if you have to. Most people are pretty good when push comes to shove.

At home keep a little bag packed in case of an emergency admission, saves a lot of worry and panic, I have done this for years as I too used to live on my own with the condition and was forever going in and out of hospital and had no one near by to turn to. You can lead a relatively uncomplicated life with Asthma even if you are alone, it is just a matter of understanding your condition and being organised.

And finally start saying hello to the neighbours build a few contacts and make some friends, you don't have to introduce yourself and say "Hi am I Meg and I have Asthma," just be the person you really are. I too hate bothering anyone, but when push comes to shove I know that neighbours will look out for me, and perhaps in time you will regain your confidence in going out and about.

Take care honey Daxiemad!

Hi Daxiemad ! - you answered well ! - loved the description "Little Green men with the big yellow Taxi " - really nice way of putting it. Yes, I live alone, and three times I have had to get that "Taxi" urgently, and as you say, being prepared with info for the "Little Green men " really helps them and you . one last thought - I have one of those "Emergency " thingies on cord so if I need that "Taxi", I just press it, , a message is sent directly to the "Little Green men " giving them details of my condition ( copd) etc, AND and "Key Lock " on the outside of the house for the men to open my front door, via a set of numbers to press to get the key, if I am puffing and spluttering too badly to get to the door . Like the Scouts Motto - "BE PREPARED" !!, - Vittorio.

Thank u,the weather was bad that day, wind &rain and cold,I was so scared,I have my meds with me but they didn't seem to work may b cos I got in a antic.i had a similar episode in jan I went out 1nite it was minus 8,I had an attack on my street,I didn't go out for months,I'm just scared now of going anywhere

Hi Meg Im sorry to hear you are worried about going out because of your asthma. It is very frightening isn't it?

I have had quite a few attacks, occasionaly whilst out, but more often I will wake in the middle of the night unable to breathe. Sometimes it will be a couple of minutes before I can get more than a trickle of breath down. I will hammer my ventolin inhaler even if I cough most of it out until enough goes in to ease the attack. I try not to panic coz I know this will make it worse but thats not easy.

I too live alone. I agree 100 pc with what Daxiemad said. A mobile phone is a lifeline. I have never had to call for help but would even if it meant bothering people. Most people are really good and will help if they can.

Hope this helps love.

Bev xx

Thank u,I did call for help on my mobile, got took to hospital, but felt awfull wen they found nothing out out of the ordinary, they blamed it on the weather at the time, cold wet ,windy etc
