hi i am having trouble heating my flat so i have bought a calor gas heater .. is this bad for my COPD does anybody know ?
calor gas: hi i am having trouble... - Lung Conditions C...
calor gas
I have no theory why.....but my mum has COPD and a calor gas heater did not agree with her at all....I have nothing wrong with me and it made me wheeze and I lost my voice...I don't know if this is a common thing or not.
I read recently on a report which was blogged on this site that bottle gas heaters were not good. We use to have one but it's been put away, if you use it make sure a door is open a little bit.
Calor gas will pump moisture into your home. I certainly would not be able to use one.
Space heaters even if they are flueless still emit fumes, which may in the acceptable guidelines for a person with healthy lungs, not so for us copders, air pollution over a period of time will affect you.
Adding my thoughts to this - any gas heater that is not ventilated to the outside world is bad for COPD as the fumes have to go somewhere.
It would be burning the available oxygen in the air around you, so you would need a good flow of air coming in. It defeats the object of heating the place up if you have to have a window or the door open to let air in.
In our bedrooms and the bathroom we have fixed gas wall heaters that are sealed. They draw air in through a vent in the wall and the spent fumes go out the same way, it's not using any of the air from the room at all. The way it works is to heat a metal box, in a similar way to a radiator, from the inside which then warms the room.
ok thanx for all your advice i will not be using this heater as i find it difficult to cope in the winter without adding to my illness will just wear more woolies , thanx again .
Portable gas heaters make the atmosphere damp which could cause mould which in itself is not a nice thing. There are tiny mould spores in the air anyway which do not affect normally healthy people with good immune systems but can affect anyone with a poor immune system. This can cause Aspergillus/Aspergilloma.
Aspergilloma is when the Aspergillus gets into a cavity in the lung (caused by earlier lung damage) and forms a fungus ball, my husband has just been diagnosed with this.
A bit worried as to how you will keep warm. What sort of heating do you have now? Depending if you own or rent your property there are a lot of schemes out there that can help. I had to fight my Council to install the right kind of regulator for my central heating as I was in a boil or freeze situation. Ringing them today to find out when they will put a proper adjustable vent into the kitchen to allow the control of fresh air. Hope you can get your money back on the heater. I do agree with all the above advice and I was helped by a very knowlegeable lady in this area. If you feel able to tell me the current heating/ventilation situation I will ask if she has any information. As I say it will be dependent on if you own or rent as to what help you can get but I will do my best to find out for you.

As has been said it will put a lot of water into the air, burn oxygen, and give out fumes. All bad for copd. An electric oil filled radiator maybe or something that has a flue, like a gas fire fitted and approved. My advice. Ditch the colour gas heater.
