I have a nebuliser and meds for it. Am not sure whether I should use occasionally, or regularly - so I haven't used it yet, keeping it for use in case of emergency.

When do you use home nebuliser ?
The best person to answe this is the person who prescribed it. It may even say on your nebules dispensing label.
Mike
you are only meant to use it as emergency use - the doctor told me that if you use it frequently should you be taken into hospital with a flare up, the nebuliser wont work very well as it becomes the "norm".

I'm with KL, advised by Resp' Team to use it as a last resort; if you look at the dosage of Ventolin MDI at 2 x 100ug (micrograms) against 5mg (milligram): that is 0.0002gms v 0.005 or x 25 stronger dose. OK you're not going to inhale all the dose through a nebuliser but say half of it (assuming you also get 100% of your MDI via a "spacer") its still >12 times the dose.

thanks, all. right then, I just use for emergency - glad have not needed to use it yet
I use my nebuliser whenever i feel the need to bring up excess mucus but only use saline and a pinch of sea salt in my nebuliser does a good job of bringing up the yellow mucus without the medicines side affects.
Thanks, Maureen, that's a good idea - how do you get the saline - on prescription ?
No I buy saline in my supermarket or drugstore here in the states, no prescription needed.
thanks.
Your very welcome.
I only use it for salbutamol, once each morning. Although I do tend to have a 'toot' on it if i am going swimming in the evening. I do have a salbutamol inhaler so I am not sure if that woudl ahve the same effect?
Hi Juliekay
I agree with Mmike the best person to ask is the person who decided you needed a nabuliser. They should have told you how frequently to use it. It depends on what you suffer from and what drugs they have prescribed.
I use mine once a day for bronchodilator followed by saline or hypertonic saline before I do my physio, but if I have an infection I do it much more frequently. I would in no way recommend anyone else to do this as, like with any medication, it is peculaiar to you and should be in agreement with your medics.
Your GP will be able to prescribe 0.9% saline.
Having a little difficultgy understanding why some peeps add sea salt to saline. How do you then know what % you are getting? Not critisising - just wondering.

I use sea salt instead of medicine because it works for me just as well bringing up the mucus. The medicine has side affects whereas the sea salt does'nt. I use only a pinch of it with saline.
Awe ok. Really glad it works for you Maureen. Better out than in eh! I don't get on with the mucus thinners either. Much prefer saline or hyprtonic.

By the way maureen we have a lady on our bronci site who lives in the states and she has her own recipe, because of the cost.

Oh great I am always open to natural recipe with no side affect. Do you know what her recipe Is and her name.?
Will pm you and will pm this lady to perhaps expect your pm (hope all that makes sense)!

Thanks all. Lots good advice and info. Will ask doc for saline
Hi Julie, if you add a teaspoon (5 grammes) of table salt to 555.5mls of tap water boiled and then simmered for 10 minutes (to ensure it's bug free), you'll have just under 1 pint (568mls) of 0.9%w/v saline solution, save a trip to your docs'
Dave
thank you Dave xxx
