Is this normal ?
Yes it could be that your first attempt did not use the right method or that you had not fully recovered from getting to the consulting room. My surgery usually does three & the printout contains all three which go in the in the records.
The last one I got the nurse said "oh thats only half what it was last year but the other number is better". The good news was that the blood pressure was fine and was told
that everyone's lungs deteriorate each year (not so good news).
I am too much of a sap or a coward to ask what the numbers are and what they mean, however I took the questionable results on board and have stopped smoking (4 weeks ago). Finding stopping smoking difficult and each time I am tempted I remember what I was like on my most s.o.b. episodes and it seems to do the trick eventually, so far anyway.
Have printed out exercises recommended on a website from Sheffield- mentioned very helpfully by Gordon57 -and still to put them into practice they don't appear very strenuous and shouldn't imagine you have do them all. There are a lot of very young people being diagnosed according to the blogs and questions lately and this site is a godsend for reassurance, you have all certainly helped me. I am 66 and was diagnosed 5 yrs. ago.
Be Well All.
Always best of 3 for me for thes spirometry. Often its just a cse of technique isn't that good and your second and third shots are better!

Hi Hawthorn
As MarieWF says it is the best blow of the 3 taken. 3 spirometry tests are taken to account for technique etc.
The best blow of the 3 will be recored into your notes, it is worth remembering though that a spiro test is difficult to get right, blowing out for enough time, not coughing etc so the first ones can be the worst one. Don't worry this is normal.

Hey Lavender1, good that you have stopped smoking. I stopped 16months ago and after 40 odd years of it I was pleased to have finally finished with it. Yes I know its hard but it is so well worth it. Keep up the good work and don't be afraid of asking for help.
Thank you everyone
