I do know that many people remain the same for many many years with the right life style. stopping smoking is the most important and not breathing other peoples smoke , good diet, exercise, presuming you were born 1968 you are the same age as my daughter, it is more than possible that with the right life style you will see old age.
Not always progressive blf.healthunlocked.com/blog...
Scotland Schools don't get this one thank god, Ive had a nice relaxing day, no wife and no kids all at work and School apart from me, back in the morning though.

As far as I know COPD doesnt always have to progress if you take good care of yourself. You will always have it though as there is no cure at present. I think its a bit of an unpredictable disease. Hope yours doesn't get worse x
i will let you no when i have been to see nurse as it took almost a year to get me on the right medications and almost a year later i feel like i am getting worse... for the past few months i have only been feeling ok after taking more than the prescribed dosage of steriods and sleeping on and off, no energy feeling's of suffocation worst during sleep..... i have c.o.p.d. and emphasema
Well, our family doctor told us that with the right medication, excercise and stopping smoking it should not progress (in my husbands case) - though he will get older !! and some of the progression could just be due to old age and natural ageing. Having said that my husband has not necessarily got worse after 8 years but was really declining until the Pulmonary Rehab course which has given him a new lease of life. When it seems like it really has progressed is when there are exacerabation - and then it seems as if COPD has really progressed. It just seems to me that you have to be proactive in caring for yourself. Good luck TAD xx
Hi does that include emphysema as well I know there are different kinds of copd ?
Hi David/
I have had COPD for 16 years+.I have now been stable for four years after I had a second medical opinion and found that I also had another complication which was sorted out.I have obviously not smoked since COPD was diagnosed,I have also given up booze and eat sensibly.I do excercise within my limits.I am on the usual inhalers +nebuliser 4 times a day and many other medications.I have been assured that if I continue in this manner I should live to a ripe old age!
A Study in china found that if copd stayed in the mild stage for eleven years then it was unlikely to progress to the moderate stage. It seems there are so many variables with this condition my own thoughts on my mild copd is that the horse is out of the stable I just try to do my best to keep as fit as I can.
Also if a person with copd stops smoking in the mild stage they should see a slight improvement in lung function which may stay roughly the same for approx five years, then slow age related decline is to be expected.
Also if a person with copd stops smoking they lose around 30ml of lung function per year the same as a none smoker.... If the person continues to smoke they lose 120ml per year
Stopping smoking is the single most important thing to slow the progression.
A lot of luck is also needed.....
