I took my son for a walk tonight to his friends and forgot to take my inhalor with me.I only walked for ten minetes and all the time i could not catch my breath and i had to keep stopping to try and breath normaly .I will make sure in future that i never forget my inhalor again.its scarey when you can not breath. My son feels ashamed of me when i have to stop when i am out of breath.

Oh dear mumsy its awful when you forget your inhaler isnt it? I have done it myself several times. Just tell your son you are old and not as energetic as him! Lol x

I'm sure he's probably just shy and doesn't want to draw any attention because he will feel embarressed ! he'll grow up one day, just you take your time!! do you have a stick to lean on when you stop for a breather? I'd be lost without mine! sometimes when we get anxious we shallow breath and that makes us get out of breath quicker, try thinking of 'how' you are breathing, breath in through your nose and purse your lips and let your breath out slowly, try to fill your diaphram from the bottom upwards, you will find you feel less anxious, your son is a lucky boy to have you keeping him safe, we might have to move more slowly but at least we're here eh! have a good breathing week! x

Whilst it is very frightening to be out of breath and upsetting to feel your son was ashamed of you, there are a lot of positive things to the experience you describe too:

1. You walked!

2. You managed it without your inhaler!

3. The thing you were scared of, didnt happen!

It's so important to experience getting out of breath, becuase whilst it's uncomfortable it means your lungs are working. The BLF advise asking for a referral to Pulmonary Rehabilitation, where you learn how to get out of breath SAFELY.

Let this experience lead you to believe you CAN do it, and WILL continue to do it.

Keep walking.

Keep puffing.

Keep going.

And ask for Pulmonary Rehabilitation!
