I am new here and have recently had an acute episode of COPD. How do we know what stages we are at?

Hi, sorry i've taken so long to answer...Yes i've had the spiroetry tests done at my annual appointments over 4 years and they were ok, i have had many flare-ups or episodes. and was able to persevere with them untill they passed. 16/7/12 i was taken to A&E as this one would not pass and i needed a nebuliser. I am used to these as i have had Asthma for 60 years and had a cardiac arrest brought on by Asthma and other near misses over the years. Getting back to COPD. I had 3 lots of nebuliser while i was att the hospital. The Dr at the hospital said my all my vitals and X-Ray were ok and oxygen levels was on the borderline of being addmitted to hospital, but i was sent home with steroids and antibiotics in much the same condition as i was when first got to the hospital. and i kept getting flare-ups for a week and just persevered with it, but it got easier each day. The Dr also said i should have a nebuliser pack at home so i could deal with the flare-ups myself and he was going to write to my GP and tell him, but he didn't do that at all. I get good days and bad days like anyone else and i cope. I do wonder what what stage i am at at times, because of the amount or lack of things i can do and the tiredness and the bad fatigue i get where it hurts. I've asked my GP to send me to the hospital clinic and have asked for a nebuliser before this last trip to hospital and was refused. I am thinking of changing my GP like many othe patients at the surgery. I actually asked for a home visit before i went to the hospital, but the receptionist said the GP will ring me after surgery which would have been 3 hours wait, thats why i went to the hospita. I am still getting some flare-ups, but i don't feel safe if you know what i mean. I thought GPs were there to help or maybe its because i'm on the wrong side of 60 years of age.For a week now i've been trying to get an appointment to see my GP, but i've got to ring back on Monday to see if theres any appointments.Best wishes Astra!

Hi...I normally leave everything to the Drs to worry about me, but my GP isn't very good. My body seems to be telling me things are not so good. I know where i am with Asthma, but this COPD is something else and it don't feel right. I'm getting flare-ups as well as swollen ankles midrift, face and fingers ect...but not all at the same time.I've got to see the Diabetic nurse at the end of this month, so i will tell her about what has been happening as she deals with the Asthma and COPD clinics at my DR.sugery as well. I feel like i need to see a consultant about COPD.I've looked at the stages online and it has got me thinking to what stage i'm at especially with the tiredness and bad fatigue i'm getting.. Do you know what stage your at? Best wishes Astra!
