Well i suppose if it works ? sadly there are people out there who get it into their heads that they are ill or their joints are falling to bits when in reality there is nothing wrong or not much at all wrong with them , for years doctors have prescribed dummy tablets for patients with illness that is in the mind that works as well, i know someone who works in the pharmaceutical industry and this person has told me you would be shocked at the number of dummy tablets that are produced for people who don't need the real tablets, so i suppose it's just another way round the problem .

Shocking use of hospital time and money !

It is nothing to do with imagined illness. It is about the power of the mind and its ability to work on the body. Placebos DO work because we decide that they will. The human brain is an amazing thing. However, if I was cut and told I had had an operation, then found out I had not, I would sue the beggars!

I dont think placebos would work with lung problems

if i went in for my lung transplant and when i woke up couldnt breathe any better than i can now but had been cut open for no reason i would beat the surgeon over the head with my oxygen cylinder

Agree it's diffuclt to understand the WHY of it all :)

We still do not understand much of how our brains work even though we have lots of research happening...and don't know enough about how to make certain beneficial brain chemicals that occur naturally....eg bananas help you produce chemicals that relieve depression. The wonderful thing is that if the brain gets a positive boost in whatever way, then it will believe the positive and act accordingly to produce the right chemicals.

A buddhist monk's brain was scanned and showed his 'happiness' bit was glowing bright - he was meditating, had put himself in a positive mind state, and this helped his brain make happiness. It was so startling they thought at first the machine was broken :) An 8 week happiness course showed again through brain scans that happiness can be increased and depression lessened massively. So if our brains can do that, it means we really can bring about chemical changes that also affect health. Amazing, eh ...and we all really know it, just look at this blog for positivity :)
