I have been prescribed Nitrofurantoin for a urine infection as advised from the lab at hospital.

On reading the leaflet and some info online I am really worried that this will affect my lungs, I need to start the Nitrofurantoin asap .

I am currently having new symptoms with either my Asthma or my heart ,I have AF and atrial tachycardia, very breathless all the time ,have not had this before!

Just wandered if anyone else with lung issues had been prescribed Nitrofurantoin for urine infection?

thanks Carol

If your pharmacist is approachable have a word with her/him, they'll know about medicinal contraindications. Also give the helpline a call to speak to a respiratory nurse tomorrow. 0300 222 5800 after 09.15 & before 5pm. Its so important to take antibiotics for a urine infection because it could travel up the tubes to kidneys etc. Good luck

Thank you, My husband did ask the pharmacist she said should be ok on them, just could do without anything additional at present as I am feeling unwell with breathing and heart worries .

Peege is right you need treatment for urine infections, as next stop could be kidneys, I think you wouldmaybe not suffer the horrid side effects you have been reading about. But the are other treatment for urine infections , so pharmasist can point you right or ring your GP tomorrow morning and ask GP to prescribe another AB as they know your best. But whatever get sorted.

What you have been prescribed is extremely common for urine infections. It is the typical go to antibiotic.

All medication could have side affects but it does not necessarily mean you will have them. If you have still not taken them there is probably no harm in waiting to speak to your pharmacist this morning but really you need to take them sooner rather than later. Untreated urine infections can create their own side effects, some of which can be quite serious.

Remember in the future that 111 is there when you can’t contact gp. I’ve found them extremely helpful in the past. Hope you get an appointment today. If not go to your pharmacist. I’ve found mine at gp surgery extremely good and they have more knowledge about medications than GPs often because that’s what they are trained in.

HiI have asthma, and several other conditions.

I suffer from recurring uti's. I was given nitro..I personally did not get on with that drug. I felt unwell after taking first one..rang docs and they gave me ciprofloxacin which I got on with better. It is still a drug with many side effects but was better fir me. My doc eventually put me on trimethoprim for my recurrent utis which I have found the best 4 me so far.

If u r unhappy go back to gp and tell them you want another drug and why u r not happy. It's your body and it's your choice what goes into it.

Good luck

Hi I have asthma and I suffer from urine infections. I’ve tried everything and become resistant to penicillins. Like you had I read about Nitrofurantoin and at first I refused them as I’ve already go interstitial scarring of the lungs. I gave in and took them in the end because there weren’t many options. I’m pleased to say It cleared the infection and hasn’t affected my lungs. I can’t say it wouldn’t for anybody else but I’m fine.

So pleased for you, I have been told by GP pharmacist that this is the only one for me according to lab culture, hope I am ok with it then, took my first one earlier, guess I feel vulnerable at the moment due to other medications I am taking for chest and Atrial tachycardia, so pretty low already, thanks for replying, fingers crossed.

What did they give you instead? I have finished the three day course now,not sure if the infection has gone completely, did not like some of the side effects, really funny head, sleepy, anxious ect, my surgery said Nitrofurantoin was th only thing for my infection.

I went on line for an alternative & bought my own trimethoprim! They cleared it up in 3 days
