Spiriva side effects

Hi I was diagnosed with Bronchiectasis aswell as having Asthma. I have taken Fostair 200 twice a day for years but I have a new med too. I have been prescribed Spiriva inhaler I've been using it for about 6 weeks now and I'm having side effects and they are horrible, don't want to take it anymore. I've been in contact with my Dr but I can't get an appointment until next Friday. I wondered has anybody else had bad side effects from taking Spiriva?

Im also on spiriva with Fostair but if I'm honest I have never had any problems. If anything it's the best combo I have had. I have asthma and copd.

what are the side effects you are having?

Hi, Side effects are bad headaches, nose bleeds, nerve pain, constipation, dry mouth, severe acid reflux, palpitations and a funny taste in my mouth. My mouth is so dry it feels like I'm choking sometimes. I feel nauseous all the time that I don't feel like eating much. I do tend to be sensitive to some meds hence that's why the Respiratory Dr said she's reluctant to try anything else but did mention that their are 2 others she could try if this didn't work. The last med she prescribed me, I spent 13 hours in A/E.

Thanks for the replies.

Hello Bowcat. How distressing for you. What side-effects are you experiencing? I can only add that I have been on Spiriva Respimat for years with no obvious side-effecs. Hope you can speak to your surgery very soon.

Do you have an asthma nurse at your practice that you could discuss with. If not ring your doctor at 8am and ask for a phone back. If your inhaler isn't working then for you , then you need to replace jt quickly x

I already have done that but they can't give me an appointment until next Friday.I'm considering just stopping Spiriva until then. The Fostair is good, I've been taking that for years. My symptoms have only started since taking Spiriva.

Hi, apologies if this has already been said, but are you on Azithromycin? This is a specific antibiotic, taken 3x per week which also acts as an antiinflammatory. It is widely used for bronchiectasis. Take care and make sure you see a lung specialist not just your GP. Brnch requires treatment quite different to other lung problems. Chris.

Hi , thank you specialist did say to my GP to prescribe me Azithromycin if I get a chest infection so I'm not taking it at present. If it's a anti-inflammatory I'm not sure if I'm allowed as I take blood thinners which I've been told not to take anti-inflammatory Meds. I keep getting conflicting information. I shall keep trying today to get in touch with the specialist at the hospital though. Thanks for your response. X

The Azithro is there to prevent chest infection. With my wife, if sputum starts to turn green then it is Amoxicillin to clear the infection, taken in addition to the Azithro. She has been taking Azithro Monday, Wednesday and Friday for the last 4-5 years. Has only needed Amoxicilling 2 or 3 times from memory. Ask the pharmacist if there is any contraindication between your blood thinner and Azithro. Thye should be able to tell you. Have a good day, take exercise if and when you can and i`ll go and collect my wife from the Physio`s place. Chris.

When you have infection and take Amoxicillin you are supposed to stop the Azithromycin during that time. I was told this by my Respiratory consultant and Doctors . You don't take both xx.Sheila ypu continue with Azithromycin after you finish the emergency pack xx.Sheila

I have taken Spiriva for years with no ill effects . Yours sounds like bad side effects so Personally I would stop it to see if what you think is side effects subsides as this would be useful info for your Gp . Recently the company who provide my chemist as changed for this drug but still no side effects. Good luck with the GP for a change.

I have been on both spireva and fostair for year and like shazbat it’s probably my best combination.

But you’re obviously not finding that, so I’m not sure. Could you ask a pharmacist?
