Copd & blocked sinuses

I’ve had Copd for over 11 yrs (emphysema) and it’s been Moderate for some time but believe it’s now severe.

More recently I’ve developed blocked sinuses and despite the usual decongestants, steroid nasal sprays and now antibiotics I can’t clear it completely. I feel sure it’s linked to my lungs as I note if I cough my nose blocks. Anyone else suffering this and if so what helps? Many thanks

good morning Jehinch. I am suffering from exactly the same thing. My consultant at the hospital even prescribed me a nasal spray which was useless. The only thing I’ve used is Nelmeid which is a saline enhanced solution which I inhale. It does help for a little while. My breathing is so much worse when I can’t breathe through my nose ,it also affects my hearing. Every thing is blocked. I’ve coped with broncheactesis and COPD for 15 years but this sinus thing is making life so much harder I wish I could help you

Sterimar breathe easy works well for sinus. First heard about it from others that post here. Use it every day. Gp approved of my usage. Since began hardly need steroid nasal spray-its much better. Also check you do not have an infection. xx

Antihistamines -No I have stopped them because I have Sjogrens and they made my symptoms worse re dryness. My oral health really suffered. I only take them if I need CT scan with Iodine and also take steroids then . The only other exception would be if have a sudden allergic reaction to anything new. So far ok. I take Cimetadine with is a H2 blocker and that appears to be enough . Antihistamines are H1 blockers. I think you might have suggested Sterimar to me. Thank you.

I have had problems with my sinuses for ages ….series of antibiotics , Sterimar , antihistamines …made little difference .

One thing I read was that humming helps , but not really tried as think it would annoy the rest of my family …Will try when everyone is out !

Just remembered , when I used to go to my gentle yoga class we sometimes all practiced humming together , gentle breath in , close lips and hum . Repeat a few times Mine was always the shortest hum , some could go on for ages .

Less embarrassing and annoying when the whole class did it together , with eyes shut

Some years ago, there was a post on this forum about sinus facial massage. I've not been able to track down the post, but here's a web page about the same techniques. Hope these help: health.clevelandclinic.org/...

I do try the massage but not found it helpful

Try some Neilmed sinus rinse. Use as per NHS website. It gets the gunk out and helps to stop it going onto your chest. Putting your face over a bowl of steaming water may help loosen it too. If it persists ask for a referral to ENT. A CT scan will show if you need an op. Good luck.

Sleep propped up, that way your sinuses can drain.

I have 3 pillows and practically sleep sitting up. It all helps

You say you’re on antibiotics. Could this possibly be a bacterial infection caused by a fungal one? Is your kitchen/ bathroom/ house damp?

Whole house was, in my case when I was in temporary accommodation, which was cold and damp - no black mould - and things started growing fine white/ grey mould in winter. Couldn’t breathe through my nose in spite of Sterimar, antihistamines, antibiotics, all sorts of nostril breathing techniques, etc. Eventually persuaded GP that this was indeed a fungal infection, especially with a recent diagnosis of asthmatic mould allergy.

I’d get a little relief using a nasal dilator (same idea as nasal strips for snoring, but this looks like a clip and goes inside the nose) which did help me get some sleep, as it was so hard to breathe.

Antifungal medication worked, but so did moving out of that place! Not needed to use the nasal dilator since.

Good luck and wishing you a good day.

Wish I’d a Magic Wand for us all! 🧚🏻‍♀️ 💖

Ps. SO important with any lung disease, to try to keep all your airways clear of mucous, as that’s the perfect breeding ground for infections. If your COPD/ Emphysema has become “severe”, then it would be a good idea to ask for help with lung/ cough clearance techniques to help with that. Not sure if you have a nurse at GPs who could help, or Community Respiratory Nurses? Plenty of videos online from Asthma/ Lung UK, etc, and phoning the Helpline for advice can never go wrong.

Hi, no damp in my house so no mould. Don't appear to get any excess mucus on my lungs but thinking of trying Pulmonary Rehab next time I have a review with the Respiratory nurse.

Very glad to hear you don’t 👍 Mould gets into everything 🥴

If you’re thinking about Pulmonary Rehab, I’d try to get the ball rolling now, before the winter comes. Depending on where you live and the availability, it can be 12 weeks or more from referral before you can get onto a course. Ask ahead of your next review what the likely waiting times are, and what’s available.

Hope you can crack this one and start to breathe easier again. Best wishes 🤗

I have had sinus problems for a couple of years now as well as nasal polyps. I also depend on oxygen 24/7. I only use the Sterimar sprays as I am convinced that it was the steroid spray that damaged my septum. I have found that when my oxygen levels are low my nose tends to be blocked although the ENT consultant has assured me that any blockage can not affect the passage of oxygen through my catheter.

Interesting, don't want to rely on any sprays etc for that very reason

I have suffered severe sinus for bout 30 years give or take a year I've seen a consultant but I've had everything going but never found a long lasting relief the only thing I do do now is blow my nose cause with sinus it's inflammation so blowing you're nose makes inflammation worse so I to be honest hardly blow my nose when I sleep bucket loads run down my throat and I struggle getting rid off it my breathing also gets quite bad I have copd so I can understand how you feel its blooming horrid to suffer from
