Hi whit. I can't say if that's ok for you but I too have severe copd and my level has been 92 for the last few years and dips on exertion. I was told that it was ok as long as it rose again and didn't stay low. I was also told that 88% and below is when you should contact GP or 111.

By the way I still exercise as best I can.

Best wishes.

Hello whit. I hope you are feeling better after your spell in hospital. You don't say why you were there, but if it can take a while to fully recover and our sats to return to our "norm". I have severe COPD and have been told 88-92 is my target level, so you're on the right side of that. I use oxygen on exertion and have been told to use enough to keep my sats over 90.

If you have any worries at all, please contact your doctor. Hope you are soon back to your old self xx

Hi. My consultant said my stats levels should be between 88-92. I am stage 4 COPD. My levels can be. Anything between 92 and 98

88/91 is correct any higher nit good for severe COPD xx.Sheila

Adding too much supplemental oxygen can fool the body of the chronic lung disease patient ("CO2 retainer") into believing that the patient no longer needs to breathe because he or she has "enough" oxygen in the blood. This brings on apnea, with possible respiratory failure requiring mechanical ventilation.

Oxygen levels for severe COPD should be 88/91. Any higher not good. . I was hospitalised when mine went higher. . Xx.Sheila

Why is it supposed to be worse if the sat gets higher?? Do you know? I'm interested because I have severe COPD too and my value ranges from below 80 (with an infection, e.g., covid) to 95 or even higher (on good days) if I'm not moving much. NIK xxx

Hopefully Garshe answers your questions but I believe it has to do with having the oxygen settings set to high which can have negative ramifications. If you are not on oxygen than sats higher should not be a problem if I understand correctly,

Thanks a lot! I had not thought of that explanation because I've not been on oxygen yet - wil soon be, probably. Your answer was really helpful. Funny thing, I tried to write your name but the computer changes it automatically to "jackdaw"... I looked it up and it's a nice raven-like crow.

You’re welcome, glad I could help. Yes autocorrect can sure be frustrating at times. Funny you should mention a crow as we have had a pesky crow outside of our house for a few weeks now and is almost continually sqwaking.

if oxy sat falls to 88 or less with exertion then you likely need supplemental oxygen. I am on oxygen 24/7 but take it off if just sitting or watching TV. I try to keep my oxy sat at 94 - 96 as that is optimal for efficient heart, lung and all bodily organs. Again, my advice if you can get to a 94 - 96 oxy level you will be far healthier all around. Best Wishes, judg69

As mentioned 88-92 is the normal for lung conditions at rest, mine drops to high 70 low 80s on exertion, so I’m now on ambulatory oxygen. The oxygen doesn’t stop breathlessness but it does enable me to do a bit more and it’s protecting my organs

I would ask your respiratory team as they know your full medical history which people on here, although well meaning, do not.

Hi whit my oxygen sits at 95 and drops when poorly or over exertion to 93/94 and I have bronchiectasis asthma and mild to med copd so it's very broad for breathing range but too high can be detrimental to copd people if given too much oxygen as garshe says it can do the opposite and be dangerous

Hi, a couple of years ago I was told by my respiratory consultant and confirmed by my doctor that if my oximeter shows 88-89% seek medical advice urgently. I normally hover around 93-94% . Generally my breathing is ok but I have slowed down in life doing anything ie; walk slower and don’t do stairs and dislike slopes. My FND also slows me down as I have issues walking, talking and thinking. Hope this helps good luck. Kevin

Hi,For me it's all about Oxygen levels. Due to cancer I lost one lung and developed COPD in the other lung. I'm on oxygen therapy and sometimes my levels dip to 61%. But I can still do a lot off things.

On good days I can do a lot like house work and light garden work. It only takes longer. Two main factors are, keep busy and think positive.
