No it's not referred to as critical. Not in the medical profession that is. Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease is a Chronic disease.

I would have thought chronic.Possibly at times you could go through a critical experience ,as could anybody who had a serious accident or various other medical conditions.

Thats is how I view the meaning of critical others might have other opinions.

It’s a chronic disease the-db in that it won’t go away. Pete has had it since 2010 or thereabouts but isn’t doing too badly on the whole. Stay as well as you can. X

emphysema and chronic bronchitis are also called COPD, I have emphysema and is it as well as chronic it is progressive which means it is not curable. Depending on who you talk to progressive diseases are palliative (not to be confused with end of life). On diagnosis my consultant referred me to a hospice as my palliative care support, all progressive diseases have the ability to become critical at some point, but I was diagnosed 10 years ago and still reasonably ok

Good question I believe its classed as life limiting chronic disease , however some critical illness cover insurance does cover disability aspect if mobility becomes limited. Remember it is also classed as incurable like many other illnesses . But in many cases it is controllable with good sensible living and avoiding bugs if you can.

COPD = Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease so therefore a chronic disease. In UK it covers emphysema and chronic bronchitis (other countries include other lung diseases I believe). COPD includes levels from mild, moderate (sorry I don't know the next levels except one is severe). I know from being on this forum many years that mild & moderate can be altered with positive life changes.

I think stage four is now usually classed as "very severe". End stage has all kinds of awful implications and in fact as many here know you can live quite a few years at this stage.

It's not a critical illness but is chronic. over the years it will get worse, how much and how soon depends on lifestyle, for example smoking, or work near irritants. It is chronic and than means no cure, but it can be managed.
