I have interstitial lung disease caused by an autoimmune condition (lupus). It was diagnosed after I saw a pulmonologist for a persistent cough that started in Dec 2019 and was still hanging around 18 months later (should have done something about it sooner, but getting an appt for a cough during the first year or so of covid was nigh on impossible 🙄).
ILD is a restrictive lung disease, not obstructive.
My cough is often hanging around when I’m inactive, but is horrific when I do anything physical, to the point I have to stop moving, cough my lungs up and wait to get my breath back before continuing on my way. It is also so violent that it has caused me to become incontinent. Tena is my new best friend
My heart rate increases significantly when I cough. I even saw a cardiologist because I had regular tachycardia episodes.
My sats drop to the 70s/80s when I’m active and jump back up to 95ish when I stop and get my breath back.
My CT shows “ground glass effect” patterning on my lungs (scarring from the ILD).
I find dextromethorphan helps with my cough. I have a letter from my rheumatology team recommending I take it regularly and I take the letter with me to the pharmacy so that I can buy more than one bottle at a time.
I am 46.
I tried to get a diagnosis of lupus for about 15 years before giving up (different areas of the country). If it wasn’t for this one lovely lung doctor who asked thousands of questions then I probably still wouldn’t have a diagnosis, although it took the lupus damaging my organs to find this doctor!
It's q normal, with lung disease for 02 to drop during activity, especially when struggling.its good that it soon returns to normal. If Yr coughing on walkng, listen to your body - slow down to a pace U can breathe without coughing + focus on controlled breathing technique.pulmonary rehab physio told me this many moons ago + it's been a godsend." I have emphysema and used to have a constant cough, eventually the cough was diagnosed as an allergy cough and I was allergic to excess vapour from stomach acid irritating the lungs. Gaviscon stopped the cough almost instantly and I’m now on Omeprazole due to hiatus hernia which causes reflux. There is also anxiety coughing which I do have if I’m in certain situations so it may be worth exploring other causes for your cough
Hiya , oh I’m waiting for a camera down the throat also been on omeprozale for over a year low does and 7 months high dose they put me on it mentioning acid reflux but all I have is the cough don’t have any heart burn or reflux etc
I didn’t have heartburn or reflux just a cough, I eventually got a sputum sample which was tested and came back clear of any type of infection which got me started looking at the allergy option. I also ended up with inflamed oesophagus which stopped me swallowing, this was also caused by the excess acid after a couple of gastroscopies identified the inflammation
I have allergies and I always fill like it’s from my throat I have hayfever and I have to walk past loads of heathers and grass fields strong weeds flowers etc so I always said it was that making me cough but I’m still
Dropping oxygen on walking even tho now I get a lift so I’m not sure
Oxygen levels dropping when exerting is normal with emphysema and most lung conditions, it’s how soon they come back up again that’s important. I now use a mobility scooter for anything more than a few yards as I get so breathless I just have to keep stopping.
