Hello Oshgosh. Opioids like morphine can relieve breathlessness by decreasing the respiratory rate it helps with panic related to shortness of breath and doesn't cause hypoxia. xx

What form of morphine have you been given, tablets or liquid, and for what reason?

Hello Ken. I assume you were prescribed this by your doctor? I have several friends who have been prescribed morphine to ease breathlessness. I don't think it is unusual. Opioids like morphine can relieve breathlessness by decreasing the respiratory rate it helps with panic related to shortness of breath and doesn't cause hypoxia. It is usually prescribed for patients with severe COPD. But you must take it only as prescribed.

Best wishes. xx 🌿

Correct. I went back to opioids as the morphine made it too difficult to breath.

Hello Maricopa. Morphine is an opioid. What kind of opioid are you on now? xx

I have just come out if hospital after a very frightening week over Christmas ,with acute respiratory failure . I have been prescribed Oromorph and it's to bring my breathing down ,and to stop the panic when my breathing gets out of control . It is certainly helping . Best wishes Babs x

Hi Babs, I was hospitalised with acute respiratory failure twice in 2018 so I really empathise with you - it's terrifying. I was prescribed Oromorph then and found it invaluable. Please dont worry about it - I know people do worry as morphine is associated with end of life but there are many other uses for it, including the reason you've been prescribed it. It will help so please do take it in line with your prescription instructions. My prescription was "as needed but not more than X times a day" (can't remember). Hope it helps. :) :)

Morphine is used to block the cough reflex. Codiene is also used but is less effective.

I am making a huge assumption that you are coughing as you are writing in this group. Everyone knows morphine is used to relieve many types of pain.

Happy New Year Kenneth x Hope your cough comes under control soon x

I was offered morphine to ease my coughing but I'm allergic so I'm on codeine linctus which helps.

I was on Morphine for 18 months before my Double Lung Transplant. It does help with 'air hunger' and I was glad to have it. It does however cause constipation and other lessor side effects. I did not find it addictive and have no need for it now.
