I've had a copy letter (Original to my gp) re my recent spirometry test. Previously I would have had a follow up OPA to discuss the results in layman's terms this this is now a thing of the past I (have IPF). Below are the results which I'm hoping someone can shed some light on. As it's seems to indicate quite a significant drop.

FEV1 1.14 predicted 1.81

FVC .127 predicted .231

FEV1/FVC 89% predicted 78%

DLCO 3.59 p redicted 5.50

says FVC reduction 6% in 1 2months

gas transfer 13%reduction since January 202

Any thoughts understanding much appreciated

Sorry can't help. Did your GP's surgery do it please?

No i have it done at the hospital. I used to see my specialist nurse or consultant immediately following my test who then discussed /explained the results but now I just the letter which means nothing to me.

Catwoman, if your have a Consultant, do the clinic nurses have a support line? The clinic I go to has a line I can call to speak with one of the specialist nurses (and a different one for the specialist pharmacist). It works well.

In the absence of that, I would suggest you speak with your GP. If they are not knowledgeable enough to interpret the letter, THEY can seek clarification. There is a system whereby they can seek specialist information by email, so it isn't absolutely immediate.

You could also consider ringing the Helpline here. The nurses there can explain what your report says but not give you any personal advice as you are not their patient and they don't have your full information/records.

The phone number is: 0300 555 2800

I also recently had a LF test and the consultant informed me that my asthma and bronchiectasis had got worse since the last one. No full explanation. On receiving a copy of the letter there wasn’t any mention of the test results. I have since asked for and received the paperwork. Looking online I came across the Interactive Respiratory Physiology - John Hopkins School of Medicine. FEV1 - forced expiration curve - the volume you can expire in one second, which is usually about 80per cent of total forced capacity- FVC. There is more information on this website (and probably others) if you need it.Life would be so much easier if tests were explained. Enjoy your day
