Fluid in lungs

Hi all,

My Dad went into hospital in March and was diagnosed with pneumonia. He stayed in for 2 weeks and then came home to recover. Early April he had an xray and they could see fluid around one of his lungs. He had this fluid removed and it has come back. Any advice appreciated please ? x

Hello ButterflyRose, sorry to hear about your poor dad. What do his doctors say? Will they want to remove the fluid again? I’m sorry but I’ve no advice to give other than to liaise with the doctors if possible. Take care xxx

Thank you Sassy59 x they have said for him to have diuretics to see if that helps to reduce the fluid and to review in a month x

Hi. My husband had fluid around his lungs after an infection which was drained off. The fluid built up again and was drained off again. I think a lot depends on the amount of fluid that is there. The hospital monitored for a while and prescribed frusomide tablets for a short time to help get rid of the remaining fluid.

Hi Biofreak, thank you for sharing. Did the fluid go away after the second drain? or did the Furosemide help to get rid of the remaining fluid? And if so has it completely gone now?

There was still a little fluid after the second drain and the furosemide got rid of the rest. The fluid hasn't returned. My husband didn't have pneumonia though but had had a double lung transplant and apparently pleural effusion (fluid around the lungs ) can happen after transplant. It's good that the hospital will be monitoring him so try not to worry. Breathing difficulties can be a feature of fluid being present and it he starts struggling don't hesitate to get back in touch with his doctors if it gets worryingly bad. How's he doing now can I ask?

Dad’s had one fluid drain and it came back, so they have given him furosemide and will review in a few weeks. He is okay, but gets out of breathe when walking or being active.

Did they say if he had pleurisy? If so, was it viral or bacterial? Was the fluid removed infected? Has he been on antibiotics?

It was bacterial pneumonia and they thought that was what may have triggered the fluid. He was given antibiotics in hospital and had the fluid drained, but has come back

Hello Butterfly Rose, what a lovely name. 😄 I can understand how stressful this must be. Chest drains are horrible and the thought of having them is upsetting for anyone. I think his doctors seem to be taking good care of him so I truly hope it gets better now. Sending many best wishes to you both. xx 🦋🌱
