"Genetic Variant, Independent of Smoking, Is Risk Factor for COPD"
Very interesting - I'm very glad that they are beginning to research outside of the smoking box! There are too many smokers who don't suffer from COPD to make this the only contributory factor.
Very interesting that they mentioned environmental pollutants.
They have so much to learn about this disease and there are so many medical persons who are unfairly prejudiced against it, as many people with COPD have never smoked, and even if they have (myself included) - we've certainly paid enough extra taxes to be entitled to reasonable, unprejudiced care.
Indeed, and we might yet get the ball rolling!
Whilst I smoked for just six years (6 pack years) and I'm also Apha -1 which pre-disposes me to COPD, nevertheless I'm delighted with this research as it should certainly weaken the present day 70% signifiacnce attributed to cigarette smoking as a factor.
I also believe the inclusion of environmental pollutants is very significant as I unfortunately have an extensive 26 year history of exposure to organic solvents, chemicals & substances!
Very interesting. I gave up smoking in 1985, but until 1969 I was a gas fitter for 15 years and, now I have more knowledge, I'm horrified at the substances I inhaled in that time.
By any chance when you were preparing/cleaning all those soldered joints, did you ever give them a rub over with Trichloroethylene (TCE) prior to applying the solder?
Used flux from a tin.
I understand and that's what makes the solder run and the colophony would/could be quite hazardous. However in the RAF we used to first degrease/clean printed circuit boards and all joints with the Trike and it's only in the last 12 months or so did I discover that the residue when heated by a soldeing iron gave off PHOSGENE GAS!! (Yum yum)
