Good stats but breathless ?

Hi all just looking for a little advice from my lung buddies. 2 wks home now after disastrous hospital stay. Good news is stats are 96 / 97 even 98 when resting better then before l went in they were always 94 /95 resting. Not so good news mobility much worse really struggling to make it to toilet and out to the car does seem better in the fresh air. Is this me expecting too much of myself too soon as usual or is it a sign of things to come. Have tried to contact respiratory team but no answer so far. Just wondering if anyone had experienced anything similar after hospital stay x

Hi Delamere. I had a fortnight stay in hospital last summer, no where near as ill as you, but still pretty immobile when I came home. Getting to the loo was a real struggle along with other daily living tasks. I had my husband to help and carers initially but I also had the support of Occupational Therapists and a Community Physiotherapist. They provided me with equipment to make daily living easier such as walking aids, commode and perches for the bathroom and kitchen. The physio also visited weekly and gave me a set of gentle strengthening exercises, many done sitting down initially. It took me months to regain some strength and a reasonable level of mobility and I still use walking aids now as they really help and the perch in the bathroom is very useful, not just for getting washed but also for sitting on after a visit to the loo to rest and get my breath back before leaving the room. I wonder if your respiratory team or GP could refer you for assessment for the same services to visit you. It certainly would be worth asking. Best wishes.

Well done on your stats! Mine are usually 88/92 .92 on a good day. I ws in hospital for 5 days at the beginning of the year and my mobility has definitely been affected. I can't walk far without getting breathless.I've more or less accepted the situation. Let me know what your respiratory team say,I'm waiting to contact mine too.

I too have sats of 96/97 but am breathless. When I said to my Consultant about this he said it is due to the lung condition and you can be having an asthma attack but still have satisfactory sats readings. I would be interested to hear other people’s views.

Hi Delamere. good to know you are home but sorry you are feeling uncertain. It does take quite a while to regain your fitness levels, slowly but surely you will get there. I use ambulatory oxygen so go up and down a lot! At rest they are around 91/92, that's without O2 . Your sats are pretty good, hopefully, you will in time be able to do more. Wishing you all the best, take care xxx 😊

I was told by a respiratory physio that you lose a heck of a lot of muscle during even a short stay in bed. I forget how much, but it was an awful lot. You do regain it slowly, but it takes time. This time last year I couldn't carry a perfectly ordinary handbag anywhere .I can now, but I still have to use my hands to get up off the floor after going to the fridge. Not very hygienic. Good luck as you work your way back to normality- lungie normality, that is.

Thankyou so much for taking the time to reply you did make me laugh about the fridge. I find that l am hanging on to everything when l walk around the kitchen leaning on work surfaces when making coffee and leaning on sink while washing up not a good look but at least l am upright xx

First thing in the morning, when I get up, I have to lean on the bed to stop myself falling over. I feel like Quasimodo. xxx

Fridge is problem when it at floor level and can't find something that's gone to back . I end up on my knees. Then have to get up. Have just learnt to put one foot forward as far as possible then lean forward and it is easier to rise.

Hi there. I am so glad that you are home but having the physical effects of your hospital de-coniditioning I t is frustrating when you feel that you are starting all over again. and you are not sure if it’s temporary or a stage of things just getting worse. Either way all that information that you have from all the other times that you have been through will help. Recovering from pericarditis last year was a real eye opener for me and it seemed to take such a long time to get back my strength.

Your stats do give some good positive feedback so I hope that you can get some help from the respiratory team to help you move on.

Take care and keep moving no matter how little

Grace

As said above, two weeks being immobile leads to a big loss of muscle strength. Keep doing the exercises you've been given to get that back. I've had to learn to walk again four times as an adult, so I know how important it is to work through the disappointment - the last time for me, my mental attitude was 'oh, well, here we go again!' Wishing you all the best for a speedy recovery to a better norm.

I have new top of the list. Just had call from respiratory nurse to say she has everything in place for me to trial nebulised antibiotics which will hopefully reduce the need for iv antibiotics in hospital only one problem she has today been told no more out patients appointments due to sharp rise in covid virus cases so has no idea when trial can take place. So to sum up instead of a 30min trial to see if l can tolerate nebulised antibiotics you are looking at 14 days on a hospital ward for iv treatment Could not make it up !
