Covid on the rise

Just checked the daily covid report for our island which gives you a total of how many new cases each day and today was the biggest increase so far with 78new cases . To think before opening up to tourists the biggest amount of cases were three . The big hotels are begging the government not to lock us down for obvious reasons but the locals are screaming at the government to remove tourists and close down the airport to all tourists . It's got the villagers really worried .

It is very worrying for people. It awful how it’s spreading here and with restrictions being lifted we all have to take extra care. I can understand the villagers being worried. Xxxx

in reply tosassy59

I can relate to why the villagers are kicking off but it makes you laugh the wealthy people with the big hotels are all about money 🤑 . The average wage here is around 600euros a month and some workers in hotels are on far less people like cleaners who work hard and get paid pittance so the hotel owners can get wealthier , without any care for worker safety from covid . It makes me so angry it's the same in the UK though the rich get richer and the poor get a damn site poorer .

I don’t know what I’ve had since last Friday but it hasn’t been nice that’s for sure . I opened up my prednisone last night as I had had enough and I’m glad I did as I’m feeling quite a lot better. Thankfully my husband hasn’t got it despite being my nurse. I’ve had my 2 Covid jabs.

Thank you Sassy. I’m feeling better this afternoon and had my first meal. I lost my sense of taste so everything tasted vile that I tried before. Xx

Enjoy each day as it comes is the answer I guess. Easier said than done though! Xx

in reply toGladwyn

That's exactly what I do it's no good screaming and shouting about it it won't change anything so just enjoy each sunrise and every night I sit under the stars .👍👍👍

Fabulous…..I’m sooooo envious now. 😀

Every night I can be found in one spot under the stars 😂 except if I've been dragged off to hospital 🤣😂🤣

Long may you be in your fav spot instead of hospital! 😂😂😂🤪

in reply toGladwyn

Too right , I love my spot 😂😂 mind you I did one night when I first came here sit on top of the mountain across from where I live the view was above and beyond fantastic couldn't make it up the steps to my house now 😂😂😂

Well at least on the bright side, you can say you know what the views like from that other side. Which was incredible for you! Lucky you! 😂🤣😆

No easy answer in tourist areas. I believe that the Balearics are experiencing similar problems and those working in the tourist industry are struggling. Stay safe.

in reply toCDPO16

I just keep clear of people 🤣 bit difficult at the moment we have a holiday apartment at the back of our home and the tourist in it as been asked to wear a mask because of us and she said oh I'm safe I've been jabbed even though it was pointed out its part of the rules here and the landlady faces a five thousand euros fine . Still no mask worn 🤣🤣 I keep as far away as possible

CDPO16 profile image
CDPO16 in reply to

It's people like her sadly contributing to the problem. You are right to keep well away.

in reply toCDPO16

People have changed so much since I was a kid they seem less caring and community spirit is few and far between , I guess I'm lucky here because it's big on community and when a person like myself as a problem everyone knows and is understanding . Today when I got home someone brought a meal round so I didn't have to cook , my Dutch friend as been round 12 times already checking up on me and the nurse who lives just a few doors away came round checking my BP and making sure I was ok . So I count my blessings for that.

Stay safe and have a lovely evening

You have some lovely friends and neighbours which, as you say, you may not have here in the UK. They will be worth a lot to you. Hope you have a much better night.

in reply toCDPO16

In honesty I'm a bit on edge after last night ☺️ but it was a bit unnerving .I'm sat outside again enjoying the night air looking at the stars something I love to do .

Not at all surprising. Hope gazing at the stars helps you to relax xx

in reply toCDPO16

Oh it does and as done since being young always looking at the stars . And here the sky is so clear at night .I have a fantastic scope for looking at stars and the moon , still trying to find the guy on it 🤣 haven't seen any mice eating the cheese up their either 🤣🤣

in reply toCDPO16

My grandmother always said when you see a new star in the sky it's someone who you have lost that you love . Never forgot that one .

News headlines this morning in the states says we’re on track to soon be having 200k cases a day. 🤦🏼‍♀️

in reply toMaricopa

Not good , it makes our 48 cases sound like a drop in the ocean , but when you look at the fact that we only had odd cases before tourists it's a fair amount especially on a small island . The old people you hardly see they tend to stay in doors and obviously people like myself have taken to staying away from people as much as possible . Even my friends here who visit always wear their masks and keep their distance which is good .

Jaybird19 profile image
Jaybird19 in reply toMaricopa

It was unfortunate that your president last year didn't initiate any protection against the virus at the start .That is when it is important to crack down . But you are catch ing up now and you have vaccines Even then they only reduce the severity of the infection .so more survive. can your hospitals cope. ?

Maricopa profile image
Maricopa in reply toJaybird19

So far our hospitals are coping. There have been a lot of deaths in the 20-30 year age bracket. Strange as these youths were healthy. Lol, our President? Seriously, he spent the entire four years in office creating a circus atmosphere. Squabbling with his own staff etc.

in reply toJaybird19

We have two hosptals here and hardly enough staff for normal stuff euromedica the second hospital is small well equipped with a reasonable amount of staff . But the country itself is been well vaccinated even the islands are well vaccinated so we can't grumble in that sense , ok people like myself who aren't Greek or have Greek medical insurance well I'm back of the line for vaccine .

Hi Davey, As I haven’t been on this site for very long I’m wondering which island you are referring to. We live in Buckinghamshire and are lucky really as we are able to carry on as we have been doing with food deliveries and local shops. Of course, it’s not ideal after what we’ve been used to, but with family around we are a lot better off than many people.

in reply toJansybelle

I'm on Rhodes .

Jansybelle profile image
Jansybelle in reply to

Oh, I remember Rhodes very well. We had a lovely holiday many years ago. Also remember going to Lindos for the day, the sand was so hot it burned our feet when going down to get in the sea! Would love to go back but it will never happen now, too old and hubby is the one with health problems, but lovely memories, standing in a shop in cheap flip flops and a mink coat which the owner was trying to persuade me to buy ! Not a good look and a bit out of place where we live!

in reply toJansybelle

Yes mink coat and flip flops mmm 😂 definitely beautiful island . I first came here when I was 21and loved the place . Sand too hot to walk on now for definite . I was just thinking about all the things we take for granted when we're younger and have our health and then I look at now and think how I wish I never started smoking , ok I don't smoke now I quit three years ago but too little too late 😂😂

I’ve been wondering what island too after reading this exchange! I’m hoping to safely travel to-a Greek island in September.

in reply toPjmf

Hi I'm on Rhodes , a beautiful island unfortunately I'm on the side of the island which as a pebble beach 😂 the lindos side of the island as all the sand beaches but in lindos it is in a basin so what ever the temperature is this side it's a whole lot hotter there 😂😂

Jaybird19 profile image
Jaybird19 in reply toPjmf

All the islands are different. Have different climate even, some busy and some the opposite . I went every year for 20 years to different islands but that was many years ago and probably wouldn't recognise some now.. As Davey says some sandy and some pebbly ,some have cliffs , and volcanic too. These can have white pumice cliffs and one has black , red and white beaches with hot springs in the sea. It has a excavated town , buried in an eruption 3,000 years ago. Very touristy and expensive . That was not my idea of Greece and was only there for day on a cruise a few years ago. Do your research first.

Yes we all worried Boris has proper ballsed this up City Village dont matter as long as there drinking themselves stupid thats all that matters

in reply toEastend555

So true 😅 trouble is no one really knew how to deal with it right from the start but I won't take anything away from the Greeks they shut everything down right from the start and kept the numbers low but the down side all the islands are dependent on tourism and as soon as they opened the doors the obvious happens cases rise . Now it's a tough call from the Greek government on how to deal with it

I'm on the villagers' side. Keep the tourists out; some of them seem to leave common sense and decency behind them at the airport. Hope you can keep clear of them and their germs.

in reply toAlberta56

Although I totally agree with you it's a tough line to go down when the island is so reliant on tourism . More should be done to enforce the rules on the tourist and instead of giving the bars and restaurants etc the fines give them to the tourist who is breaking the rules . I'm sure a nice five thousand euros fine would soon make them realize 😅😅

My sister is in Whitby North Yorkshire. This is a holiday town and depends a good deal on tourists. She says Whitby has been swamped by visitors , many more thsn usual and they haven't obeyed rules either. She was elbowed off the pavement one day.! Some those who would go abroad and misbehave were behaving the same here.Take care Davey

Hope you can stay out of hospital. Take care. We were due to go to Corfu last October. Would love to go but I’m a bit paranoid about covid 19. Still wearing a mask when in shops etc. Keeping a distance from others. Don’t fancy being on a plane and all those germs.

X

in reply towatergazer

Yes it's scary times for us all but what can we do ? I tend to isolate apart from appointments with different specialists and the odd trip to the shop . I hate being unable to go and enjoy the beach and go for a swim . I am going to try Go for a swim on Saturday morning at a little part of the beach tourists avoid 👍😂

I would keep out of the way of people. If you do have to go out then wear a mask. I’ve kept mostly out of the way of people since it first started. I do go out but very rarely and I wear my mask and wash my hands a lot. They’ve opened up everything here and it started to really go up but all of a sudden for five or six days it’s been going down so obviously the vaccinations are working.

in reply toMavary

Problem is there's no guarantee that this will carry on it could spiral up again as quickly as it comes down . I've pretty much isolated myself from day one apart from appointments and the odd trip to the shop and I always wear a mask regardless and constantly doing my hands . It's all become routine , I look like a surgeon when I sort my stepfather nappies out gloves masks and visor and my disposable pinny 🤣🤣🤣 but it as to be done . Even though my condition is sever I still have to care for my stepfather who is 81 recently bust his hip and suffering with mild dementia . Not an easy life when your stage four and in the last leg of life 😅😷

Mavary profile image
Mavary in reply to

I really feel for you. Can you not get some kind of help for your stepfather and it sounds like you need some help yourself. You need somebody there.

in reply toMavary

To get a home care worker it's six hundred euros a month you have to pay yourself and I'm still waiting to hear from pip I'm on ESA and what I get paid goes out on my medication and bairly covers it . 😞

You Are So Right To Keep Away From People Take Care Keep Safe 🖤🖤

in reply toCaptainPugwash

I think it is the only thing to do to keep safe 👍

People are antsy to get out and travel. Not this guy. I stay local but that can be tricky too because of all the festivities ( fairs, carnivals, sports and etc.) they have going on.

in reply to

I understand it's been a long time coming up to the point where at now freedom but it shouldn't come at the cost of people like ourselves .

in reply to

I agree. But I know some people are just too stubborn to see what's going on. I protect myself but they don't want to protect me.

in reply to

Always the case , that also includes family members aswell you just have to watch your back constantly unfortunately . 👍

in reply to

Right

in reply to

It's strange how times changed people so much , as a kid it was community and family now half the time you don't even know your neighbors and may not talk to them and coming from a fairly tight not family I see families pushed apart from each other . It's such a shame that certain values we used to have and live by have disappeared .

in reply to

Do you think it's the generation that some part of that?

in reply to

I would say a big part of I'm honest , lots more families breaking apart more alcohol use drugs and lack of money and motivation

in reply to

Sounds fair enough. I agree.

in reply to

I think about where I lived and when I left school there were plenty of jobs available because our area had boot and shoe factories hosiery and knitwear factories warehousing jobs engineering then start of the 90s almost every hosiery and knitwear factories closed to cheap imports same with boot and shoe factories . I can remember large lines outside the doll office . That's when it all fell apart the 1990s

in reply to

Even now it's worse when the pandemic hit. A lot of small businesses folded.Yes when I think of those businesses you would've thot they would be been good because of the higher population now. A lot of people want style, name brands, more quality and will pay for it. I would say the kids in their 20's and some 30 y/o got spoiled by getting what they wanted. Now I said some not all.

in reply to

Well look at youth of today half want high wages without having to work for it , and when they were kids probably like you said got spoilt as a kid if I wanted something I had to buy it myself but my parents weren't tight they taught me the value of money so I used to work on a farm every weekend it got me what I wanted and taught me that if you worked hard you got paid well .

in reply to

I have a family member who went to college got out and demanded 30 to 40 dollar an hour job. Guess who didn't get hired...Yes I grew up delivering papers then farming, shearing Christmas trees.

in reply to

Hard work always pays off . I worked in security for twenty two years I covered shows concerts and all other types of security including wages runs to businesses shopping centers . I loved the job especially the shows and concerts . So always fit and exercising now I struggle to tie my shoes 😂😂 smoking unfortunately but I stopped three years ago but too late damage done 😂

in reply to

Sorry to hear about the health issues.I bet it was quite interesting being security at concerts. I've never done but a friend of mine did. He said it was different.

in reply to

Definitely different 😂😂 but I loved it . When I was 18 I had a plan I wanted to ride from one end of the States to the other on a motorcycle , it never happened unfortunately work , wife and kids 😂😂 the usual one thing that would have gone on my bucket list if covid hadn't arrived to the globe 😞😞😞

in reply to

Riding across the States would've been awesome. Use to ride myself.

in reply to

Rode my dad's BSA Starfire when I was eight with my dad on the back to hold it up and had bikes in my life ever since until now , not allowed motor vehicle of any description because of the type of seizures I have

in reply to

That's a bummer. I gave mine up in my 30's.

in reply to

I always said you can take my car but don't touch my bike's 😂😂 I had my Honda four hundred rebel which was a US import I had my 400crosser for messing around on and I had a mini Moto that my daughter used like a rocking horse when on its paddock stand , I used to race it with my mates in the village in the local tennis courts 😂😂😂

in reply to

They took them away or did you get to sell?

in reply to

Sold them before coming to Rhodes Greece , wouldn't fit in my suitcase 😂😂 I've got a quad but can't use it because of the seizures so it's being sold off 😂😂

in reply to

At least you got to sell. You moved to Greece?

in reply to

Wasn't by choice , marital breakup , I only came here to pay my respects to my mother who passed away and got stranded here . I've worked through most of Europe been to Saudi but always wanted to go US and Australia no chance of either now . I'm stage four with lesions on my brain and heart and a shot spine so totally defective 😂 still got my sense of humour though 😂😂

in reply to

Sorry again for your health. I've been to Athens. Was so hot!!

in reply to

Hotter here 😥😥🥵🥵 at 57 I've done a lot of things in my life so don't complain but had more plans , my specialist said the averages give me between one and three years but as she said I'm not god 😂

in reply to

in reply to

You're a rare cat. Still going to happy even in bad times.

in reply to

You have to because how you deal with things on the surface effects others . I always have a smile on my face even on my worse day . Why make people feel bad just because you are it's not fair on others. Today I spoke with my daughter who's 21 it was lovely, I speak with her once a week and she always makes me feel good.

Always had a positive attitude in life .
