Just a little catch up on broken bone. I had an accident last week and have a broken bone in my foot. Firstly I did not go to A&E on the day as I did not know if it was a sprain or not. Next day due to pain ect I contacted 111 0n line who advised to attend A&E they also advise to ring before attending which we did and after some time the connection cut off. On arrival at hospital I was told I would be going down to minor injuries but no idea of how long it would be. In minor injuries the wait time was short and no one there besides myself. I saw a lady who agreed it looked like a broken bone and sent me for xray. There was no wait for Xray either and they also offered to do a chest Xray due in two weeks time to save me coming back. Heres where the mystery starts I was shown a foot Xray for a minor break in the small toe at the top, given a boot to wear and advice ect and told they would ring me back within 72 hrs if not to contact them on the number given. When I rang back it was implied I could not be treated without seeing a doctor but I attended A&E for this to occur. Following this call in which everyone was very polite ect. I have become totally confused and received a letter saying I have a 5th Metatarsel break , which I had already worked out myself from the symptoms. So what next . What is the proceedure for injuries requiring A&E attendance during the current virus ?, anyone know please. It seems my Chest Xray was clear ???? Agreed I have a broken foot bone but Xray seems incorrect. Do I attend A&E again , ring the virtual fracture clinic, or contact my Gp just to make sure the records are correct . ?????????????? and apart from that I can hardly walk due to faulty right knee and left foot injury. Glad to hear England won well done guys . Hope others are having a good weekend sorry for long winded post.

Totally Confused Again
Hmmm I think I would ring virtual fracture clinic and keep contacting until able to speak to someone who knows what talking about. Don’t understand why you need to be seen in a&e when already had X-ray and some treatment. Possibly might be helpful to ring minor injuries clinic and explain situation to them…. Hope you able to get sorted quickly.
Hiya, oh my, I would be confused as well. So, they just sent you home again without doing anything with you foot? I mean your
foot should be in a cast or splint to keep it stable or not?
I don't understand why you have to ring again at all, you should have gotten your foot fixed.
I to would call this virtual fracture clinic to get your foot sorted, best wishes and hope you will get better soon again 👍😘😃
Its usual to return to fracture clinic within a few days for orthopeadic assessment. But now because of Covid 19 its a virtual fracture clinic. How do you establish a broken bone and its severity if the Xray is incorrect and only a doctor can request an Xray . Thats what A&E is there for. I thought nurse practioners could ask for an Xray if they suspect a broken bone. How wrong can we be , and what has happened to out of hours service when I worked for NHS I had to work every weekend and in dementia services. Its a care service job not an office job and everyone has to work unsocial hours . Which the majority of us appeciate and don't abuse the staff either verbally or otherwise. Looks like I will have to ring up again to get facts and make sure they are correct on my records. Thank you for your reply.
The out of hours here in Cardiff is absolute rubbish!
I agree I would ring the virtual clinic, I really hope you get the answers you need, as it must be so confusing for you. Please keep us updated on how you are. Have a great day and take care 😊 Bernadette and Jack 🐕 xxxxxx
I would contact your doctor on Monday Katie as the hospital will send result from both your xrays to your GP. He may be able to advise more about the boot, how long to use it and if you need to return it if the hospital hasn't already advised you of same.
Wishing you a speedy recovery.
Many thanks
Hope you get this sorted soon Katie xxx
Hi Katie, sorry to hear of your broken little toe. When I broke my little toe all they could do was to tape it close to the next toe and reluctantly gave me a boot saying they don’t usually give out boots. I hate making a fuss and struggled for three weeks before seeking help and advice for it as the bruising, swelling and inability to move my toe had me worried. Try to raise it Katie, keep it cool with ice packs to help keep the swelling down and eases some of that awful pain and give them a ring as they have been so confusing by the sound of it. Hope that’s some help to you.
As far as I know and judging from the symptoms I don't have a broken toe its the metartarsel bone thats broke due to a twisting accident. Not to worry its still a boot job with upto three months for recovery. However this bone can break again while healing if not rested causing more problems. Thank you for your post. I'm waiting for the Gp to ring this afternoon before I re contact the Virtual Fracture Clinic which is not on the list of clinics for the hospital by the way.
Oh Katie you must be a whole world of pain with that break. It’s so unfair that you still haven’t heard from the virtual break clinic. Please push them as you need their help. Elevate, ice and please try not to walk on it as hard as it may be. Did they give you crutches too? I hope that you’re getting some help as you need to be off that broken foot. xx
Yes it is extremely unfair isn't it!
Is that your kitty in the pic then?
Hi Catgirl 1976. Yes that is a pic of my much loved and missed Cat. My world fell apart after losing Boo then only a little two months later I lost the man that I still love, adore and yearn to be with in heaven. I am finding life with out them both so hard and to manage to just get through one day and night so very soul destroying and painful. X
I'm sorry to hear about your losses.
It's always the way isn't it how they all come in the same blow!
Really nasty for you, Katie. Takes a long time to heal. You have my sympathy, as it happened to me.
Thank you , I can cope with the pain but not the hazzle it causes and I would like to see the Xray so I can see the damage myself and give informed consent for treatment plus a correct diagnosis. Not refusal because I did not go to my Gp but contacted 111 and rang A&E as it was out of hours(Saturday morning) . Its too complicated . When an older person has an accident it upsets their system more and takes longer to heal. The irony is for sixty pounds I could have had it Xrayed immediately which is only a little more than the £50 taxi fare to the local A&E and saved myself all the sorrow of the past week. How long did yours take to heal? , I have arthritis so it may leave me with lasting pain anyway. Enjoy your day
