Always tell your doctor that you have used your rescue pack, to get it replaced.
It usually consists of steroids and antibiotics as others have said. It is for when you feel an exacerbation of your copd. I. E. Tight chest take steroids, excessive mucous that has changed colour/consistency take antibiotics. THIS MAY NOT BE APPLICABLE TO YOU, your management plan may be different. It means you can begin treating the exacerbation immediately. It's sods law that they usually happen when obtaining medical help is not easy, e.g. 2am. You should contact your gp as soon as possible for advice and to replenish your pack.
As others have suggested an emergency pack consists of steroids and antibiotics. The dose and types can vary from person to person. Before you are issued an emergency pack there should be education on when you should take the antibiotics or steroids or both. I personally try to speak to a doctor or ring 111 for advice before taking them. The emergency pack is great when you cannot get to see a doctor ( I always seem to get a chest infection over Christmas) but it is always best to see a doctor if you can.
Antibiotics and steroids ,Amoxicillin and Prednisolone for me.
Usually steroids and antibiotics- Make sure you get two weeks worth of antibiotics as my doctor short changed me for years and only gave me one weeks worth, which meant it kept recurring and I ended up after one exacerbation with pneumonia- you need also to get your mucus tested to see which ones will work for your little bugs(Eat well and exercise as much as possible too!)
