Oral thrush is usually caused by steroid inhalers not prednisolone. To prevent always rinse out mouth brush teeth and gargle after the steroid inhalers use, then eat/ drink something to wash any remaining residue away.

I've never had oral thrush so can't recommend anything once you have it, but I am sure you will be able to buy something to help over the counter or on line.

Could be it goes on its own once oral hygiene after inhaler use.

Best wishes

Thanks for replying. Am not actually on inhalers. The steroids are for the Nephrotic Syndrome that put me in hospital for 4 weeks where I caught Covid while inpatient. Am very lucky that it so far hasn't set off any Bronchiectasis trouble ๐Ÿคง๐Ÿคž

You GP will be able to advise, but I would have said then, your thrush may not be connected with the steroid at all but more with your health issues although could be caused by other medications I guess, but your doctor will best be able to advise.

From NHS Pages:

How you can prevent oral thrush

Thrush is an infection caused by a fungus called Candida. Some things can make the fungus grow more than usual.

You might get thrush if you're:

taking antibiotics over a long time

using asthma inhalers

getting cancer treatment like chemotherapy

There are some things you can do to help prevent oral thrush:

Do

take care of your teeth: brush twice a day, clean your dentures, and go for regular check-ups even if you have dentures

brush your gums and tongue with a soft toothbrush if you do not have any teeth

sterilise dummies regularly

sterilise bottles after each use

rinse your mouth after eating or taking medicine

go to regular check-ups if you have a long-term condition like diabetes

Donโ€™t

do not wear your dentures at night

do not keep wearing dentures if they do not fit properly โ€“ see your dentist

do not smoke

Get un touch with your GP again. I started with an oral thrush infection in July and, in spite of 5 courses of different anti fungal medication it still hasn't cleared although it has inproved a bit. I am currently waiting for a swab report but wondering if it is drug resistant. In the meantime I'm eating plain yoghurt as suggested by my dentist but I can't honestly say that it is having any effect.I hope your infection doesn't turn out to be as persist.

Thanks & sorry to hear you've had to be up with that for so long. Hope you get the swab result soon

Another member of kidney forum recommended this herbal remedy as the only thing that works for them . The main ingredient is Caprylic Acid. I have ordered some online called 'Candiclear Complex ' to try if the Fluconazole the GP prescribed today doesn't work in a week

I tried the Fluconazole & the Nystatin for 2 weeks each then it was back worse than ever. So I bought these containing "Caprylic Acid" online as recommended by a member of another forum but Um'd & Ah'd about taking them as on so many tablets at the moment. Anyway 2 days ago took some & few doses later am seeing/ feeling some improvement. To early to say it is permanent but wanted to give you an update

May I ask what you bought and where from? Having looked online there is quite a confusing choice. Thanks, Carole.

hello, Ihad terrible mouth ulcers sore gums,so painful i tried everything i could on internet herbal dr medication,It made me so miserable and noticed certain foods msde it worse. After about a year of painful ulcers I came across an article on google, it was like reading my own story-Lichen Planus in mouth,Took it to drs for him to read, got sent to dental hospital.Who prescribed me Betamethasone dispersible tablets to use as mouth wash.It helps keep the ulcers at bay and my mouth is so less painful.Another thing i notice when i have a copd flare up and take amoxicillin plus prednisolone the steroid keeps the Lichen Planus manageable.Hope this helps you. I was going to suggest natural yogurt but I don't know if it would be potent enough to deal with a persistent bout of thrush. Sorry not much help but hope you can get it sorted

I was given Corsodyl by my GP which helped

I tried a lot of treatments for oral thrush, none of which worked; my GP also prescribed Corsodyl (original) mouthwash, which did the trick

That's interesting Dedalus. No one has suggested that and I have had persistent oral thrush since July so thank you, I will try it.

It's definitely worth a try. Nothing else worked for me, and I was definitely not hopeful for a simple mouthwash, but it worked (other stuff may have 'softened it up', but after months with oral thrush I was just happy something got rid of it). A prescription is not needed. Good luck with it.

Been using the corsodyl for over 2 weeks now and it hasn't made the slightest difference. Will continue until the current bottle is finished but then not continue. Thanks for the suggestion though.

We're all different - shame it hasn't worked for you. Hope you find something else soon to get rid of this horrid thrush (if you do, please share). All best wishes.

Hi DedalusWell finally I think ๐Ÿคž have seen improvement on Herbal Tablets .

The active ingredient is Caprylic Acid and the ones I bought online are called" Candiclear Complex" suitable for vegans , the rest of the ingredients are herbs etc They are made by " Span Labs" and don't cost a fortune. You do have to be careful which other medication you are taking.

Do hope that helps,

Hattie ๐Ÿ˜Š

Thank you so much Hattie. Great that something is working at last. I have made a note of the herbal tablets for the future (would be nice to think I won't need them, but I'm not that optimistic). Hope you're thrush-free soon. All best wishes.

GP has prescribed fluconazole to try for a week but in the kidney forum someone has suggested a herbal remedy they swear by. Will find the name
