Christmas means a lot of things
We look forward to each year
And signs of it approaching
I used to hold so dear
The shops had signs of Christmas
To help to sell there stuff
With shelves of toys and other things
As though we hadn't enough
The holly and the ivy
And mistletoe everywhere
Which gave a chance to kiss the girls
If anybody dare.
But as a little innocent lad
My thrill came in the shop
To see the heading on the Beano
Had snow across the top.
You summed past Christmases well Don. My best present at Christmas was the Beano Annual. 😁
Oh yes, the Beano annual was a must. I have a vague recollection of the being a penny and an orange because of some old tradition that I never understood. 🤷🏽♂️
I used to get an orange too. I didn't know that it was part of an old tradition. Never got a penny though. I remember my nana made her own Christmas pudding with a threepenny bit in it. It's a wonder that no one ever broke a tooth when they found it in their portion!
I got an orange,some nuts and usually a colouring book and crayons.
I loved Beano too Don and Dandy. I also used to read Valiant every week. I wasn’t into Bunty. Xxx😘❤️
I had a thing about snow on the title heading of magazines and those that didn’t do that went right down in my estimation. 🙄xx
Used to enjoy the Christmas Annual I got as a kid. It varied from year to year.

Hi Don, Your latest poem brought back lots of childhood memories. Throughout the year I lways looked forward to my weekly comics, Dandy and Beano, and at Christmas The Christmas Annuals. I can remember the time when a friend of mine was very upset because her parents were stopping her weekly comics. This was because they felt she was getting too old for them and should be reading "better stuff". Fortunately I had parents who believed reading material of all kinds got children interested in the written word. and to enjoy reading books. I have to say it was the right decision as I developed a love of books and enjoy reading to this very day.

Aww that was a brilliant Christmas poem Don. My dad loved Beano and I used to get the little comic of it too! But I was more a Bunty girl...guess it was more my era 😊
That is lovely I loved the Beano but had forgotten about the snow.. Did you have the Dandy too? Then when yoh got older did you get the Eagle .?

I loved the Dandy and Beano....Desperate Dan and his cow pie 😂In my stocking always got apple orange and nuts and a little tin of carmels.

Nostalgia of remembering beano and dandy. Comics and annuals. Happy days.
That picture brings back memories Don. In the last twelve months a neighbour gave us an old comic weekly from around the 50s which we kept in a box then, with his permission we donated to our local hospice that they planned to sell on line to raise funds .

I also was in to Film Fun annuals with Laurel and Hardy, Frank Randell etc, in fact l still have a few, a bit brown but otherwise good condition. Carole x
I looked forward to getting my Dandy and Beano annuals at Christmas. Then one year, Father Christmas must have decided it was time for me to get all girly and I had 'Girl' or 'Bunty' and 'Judy' annuals instead. I was a tad disappointed, I must say, as I always looked forward to my weekly Dandy and Beano and the annuals were the icing on the cake! Good old Desperate Dan, Little Plum (our redskin chum), Dennis the Menace, Minnie the Minx ... Loved 'em all! xx Moy
Looking back now it seems that the characters we read about as children had more influence on our lives than any real live characters did. That's probably why our parents were keen for us to move on. 😁xx
