Cooking for COPD partner is a problem, as it's all done in the main room in our house. My partner is getting affected by fumes - help?!

I love cooking, but I've tried so many ways to do it without affecting my partner. I put lids on pans, try to do it when he's in another room or outside, but the slightest hint of steam or smoke and he has to leave the room. Has anyone any ideas for us??

Hi sallyfran, keep a window open and have you an extractor fan over the cooker, I'd so please use it. I know it's not much help but there may be others on here that could help. I hope you find a solution soon, have a lovely day and take care 😊 Bernadette and Jack 🐕 xxxxxx

I no longer use a regular cooker or hob. Rely on my Combi microwave, a remoska, slow cooker and on rare occasions my one induction hob. ( only use the combi oven in the microwave for cooking clean - ie no splash food - like qiche, pie, scones etc) All this to help preserve indoor air quality.

Good suggestions from Bernadette.

Thank you so much Bernadette, I am seriously thinking of ditching the oven and hob except perhaps for pressure cooker on hob. Maybe that'll have to go before long.Good ideas for microwave/oven.

Do you think extractor fans are any good?

All the best, thanks again! Sally

yes as Bernadette mentioned extractor fan would be helpful if when you are cooking a lot of steam and smoke from cooking - but best to try and avoid steam and smoke in the home if you can. And definitely change the air in the room.

A pressure cooker can produce steam. As Bkin suggests is good. We use a slow cooker and microwave, I have the same trouble breathing with cooking. On the days my partner is working, she has meals at work, I eat fish salads

I have difficulty with this too but find it's hot food cooking, like chilli, curry etc that really get to me. I cook with the back door open and the fan on, but still have to stay out of the kitchen as much as possible while things are cooking. A great pity!

Hi sallyfran, I always use my cooker hood. It takes away any smells and of course I always open windows so that steam escapes. Do you use multiple pans, if you do this generates too much steam and you really are wasting fuel. I use a steamer which generates the equivalent steam to one pan whilst cooking three different items. Steamers are electric and use very little power, they are easy to clean and food tastes great. Take care and I hope this helps, Maximonkey
