Scams .....are you being careful.

Hi everyone ,

Have had two scams in two days .....the first was about my car tax. I was informed it was out of date and I would receive hefty fines if I drove onto the road ..........it all looked very official, but there were slight mistakes.

Apart from my car is taxed yearly in the Spring and I don't use credit cards ......... I have reported this one to the police.

The call early this morning was from an international number ,this time to inform me Amazon prime was about to give me a £40 refund because I had cancelled my membership........ As I had only used the free period plus one month at £7-99.......cancelled back in July ....... It didn't add up.. Any protest of nonsense on my part was greeted with , ""this call is being recorded madam ""

Needless to say neither call got any of my precious bank details , but calling so early ,and when half asleep we can make mistakes......

Jo. 😊

Thanks. I have had several dodgy emails. But I ignore any phone numbers I don’t recognise. Tricky one as doctors phone calls come in as “No caller ID”. But I think we all know when we are expecting those.K x

I think that is one reason why local track and trace would be more successful if done at a local level than done centrally. I would hesitate to answer an 03whatever number.Cx

Whoops... I ignore those. 🤔 what have I missed?

What is an 03 number? I’m pretty sure I had a call from something starting 03 the other day. I don’t answer calls from an unknown number, I figure if it’s important (or genuine) they’ll leave a message.

Hi, I get these type of calls daily! I just put the phone down. If its a genuine call the bank or other body would find different ways of contacting you. These calls are a nuisance.

Hi Jo, thank you for your post. A good reminder to take care. We had two calls yesterday, recorded messages, from BT and Amazon speaking about our accounts being compromised etc. I put the phone down.

You did the right thing reporting the car tax scam to the police.

Take care and thank you again.

A timely reminder thanks. Theyre good at using Amazon, royal mail or 'delivery' phishing emails and texts, especially now in the parcel posting season and while we're stuck near home & forced to order on line. It's so easy so click on a link before brain engages when you're actually waiting for a delivery. P

I’ve had quite a few emails and ‘phone calls purporting to be from internet provider, bank and Amazon, despite being ex-directory and on the preference scheme. I always take 5 mins to think rationally. Put down the phone and never click on any links. Sometimes I would phone the bank or whoever but never using a number given by the scammers. Emails should never be generic and should aways have your name on them.

This happened yesterday. My port site appeared a little lumpy and for peace of mind I contacted the nurses. They kindly fitted me into clinic and whilst there one of our brill consultants decided to take the opportunity to do a face to face consultation instead of the upcoming telephone one. Whilst there the landline rang twice. She answered it and it was scammers. My consultant was astonished asking how do scammers get hold of a telephone number within a hospital to a telephone which is set up to make external calls only!!!!!!!

Unplug your landline when going to bed and take your mobile with you. At least your mobile you can set up to receive no notifications until a set time x

I can think of better things to go to bed with (other than a mobile phone)Unfortunately, unplugging landline is not possible as members of the family are seriously Ill And we are always on alert.

I suppose a mobile may be a good Idea, but I do not have one.. I think they are too intrusive on privacy (like) My wife would be phoning every two minutes of the day to find out where I`m hiding.... Na Na Na fir me ta....

I seem to get quite a few Scam e-mails, I always hover over the name of where it is purporting to be from and it is always some random e-mail so I forward them on to report@phishing.gov.uk or phishing@hmrc.co.uk.

I have BT call Guardian on my landline and that seems to work well at blocking nuisance calls in my experience, I believe there are other systems that do pretty much the same thing.

So Yes good to be alert and reminded from time to time so thank you Buzzytruk

My niece got scammed recently. She had just finished work, was tired and because she had so many attempts to use her card, thought it was genuinely from the bank. Realised as soon as she'd transferred money, she had made a mistake, but too late. Unlikely to get her money back but she has now changed banks.

We were getting fed up with scam emails.

I mentioned it on here and lots of people came forward with helpful suggestions of how to stop them.

The most useful one was to get a new phone with built in Call Blocking. We found the phone on Amazon and it arrived the following morning.

It didn't take long to set up initially but it did take quite a time to put in all our known contact numbers. When people phone, the call either comes straight through as normal (if they are on our contact list) or it changes to an 'announced call' otherwise. This means the person the other end has to say their name and then we can choose whether to accept, block or send the call to answerphone. It's amazing how many callers haven't bothered to say their name - probably because they are automated calls! It really has made a huge difference. Since we bought it quite a few months ago, we have only had one call get through which we accepted as they gave a name. It was someone trying to sell us insulation so we blocked it straight away.

We've had no problem with the doctors getting through as they just announce themselves and we accept the call. Easy!

We are both so grateful for the advice we were given here. To say it's changed our lives would be a bit dramatic, but it certainly has made a huge difference as the calls were getting more and more frequent and answering the phone to junk calls was a pain in the posterior!! xx Moy

in reply toMoyB

Yes we also got one but have noticed the Amazon calls are still getting through. I have also missed a few calls from my family in Scotland I am glad I phoned them as I would never have known they didn't understand and just put the phone down,I have blocked that Amazon one now lol

MoyB profile image
MoyB in reply to

Have you put your family numbers in your allowed contacts?

We have occasionally had calls from family who have changed their numbers and one or two of those haven't followed the instruction to give their name.

I now do a daily check on the phone to see what numbers might have called. You can look up numbers on 'Who Called Me' and they will usually give an indication of location. I do this if it looks like a 'normal' number. You can call any you think may be genuine and put the phone straight down again if they are not someone you know. Then they can be blocked.

xx Moy

in reply toMoyB

Will have a look at that,i do press the top about calls that day but i think something has gone amiss cause when i got the first call thingy from Amazon i did block the number, maybe they have other numbers they use as i have up till now had 3 from them, ruddy crooks.we also last week had a call from someone asian spoken asking if we had an accident recently said they could fight it for us i told them yes i am in a wheelchair from it oh she said what are your injuries I said no I don't like to talk about it and put the phone down on her, but we need to look at the phone it is just letting anyone through.

MoyB profile image
MoyB in reply to

What a nuisance for you! It is strange that it's letting the calls through. My husband had the accident one the other day on his mobile. He hasn't worked out how to block them on his phone yet! xx

I get the Amazon one constantly phoned Amazon and was put on to someone sounded like they were from China and I found it hard to understand them, eventually I got them to understand and they said Amazon would never contact like that.

There seems to be loads doing the rounds at the moment and I think everybody is being affected. The latest one I have had is an e mail from DFL saying I had missed the package being delivered for the last 3 times and would now need to pay a fee for redelivery, the clue on this is the "Dear email address" rather than " Dear Irene" , then when I viewed the email address it came from it wasn't dhl. We have to be so vigilant x

MoyB profile image
MoyB in reply toIzb1

We had that last week but is said it was our Amazon parcel (and a number) and it was supposed to be DPD. When I went on to the official website and put in the parcel number it didn't exist. The trouble is, if you follow the link in the email and put in your bank details they can rob you of thousands (if you've got thousands to rob, that is!). xx

Izb1 profile image

Its scary, so many thieves out there that think it is ok and normal to rob people, I hate the fact that they have no morals at all. Keep vigilant and stay safe x

I emailed Amazon about these calls and for some reason you can’t report them direct to them and need to use the Fraud Dept. That’s too much effort for me🤭So I tried blocking the number and then they phone the next day from a different one.

Now, I answer and then take the phone off the hook until they are finished.

You would think that by now they would have realised that we all know it’s a scam.

Izb1 profile image

I have a whistle next to the phone for these calls and take great delight in using it. Most are recorded though so just hang up x

My favourite scam is the one that claims to have videoed me watching an adult website movie and threatens to email the video to my twelve friends if I don't sent variable amounts of bitcoin to a specific address. Has me laughing every time as I forward it to report@phishing.gov.uk .

This morning's spammy email is the old chestnut where some lawyer is going to split a multi-million dollar estate with me. This time it came complete with Outlook and Gmail email addresses, which will give the Government anti-phishers something to chase after, now that I've sent it on to them.
