My husband Pete has COPD and is suffering lots of mucus too at the moment. He tries drinking more water to help with that but I do think it’s the time of year too. We’re indoors a lot now. Speak to a doctor if you can either by phone or online and tell him your concerns. Xxxx

Thank you so much, I was thinking it may be the time of the year when the heating goes on xx

Good afternoon, sorry to hear you're struggling, Sassy59 is right, drinking more water can help to loosen mucous, and there are medications you may be able to take too. Have a chat with your doctor or respiratory nurse.

You could also give us a call and have a chat with someone in the clinical team if you wish - 03000 030 555. We're happy to help.

Regards, Biddy

The standard treatment for reducing mucous is montelucast, but I found it made me tired; however many people find it very effective. Carbocysteine is generally used to thin mucous, but I find N-acetyl cysteine works quite well, and is available from health shops; my respiratory consultant seems quite happy with that, but intends also to prescribe an anti-muscarinic inhaler containing tiotropium - we’ll see how that goes!

Have you gotten any lung therapy? I’m positive that most of my mucus comes from post nasal drip because my nose is always running as I’m on oxygen 24/7..What they do is nicely pound your back in the location of your lungs, this is to dislodge the mucus that has attached itself. Once it is loose it is easier to cough up. I also use cough candies sometimes just to get a break when needed.

Good luck and I pray you find something that helps you with your cough. Everyone is different so once you find your was it will be great b
