Testing and tracing 'key to schools returning', scientists say.

Current testing and contact tracing is inadequate to prevent a second wave of coronavirus after schools in the UK reopen, scientists have warned.

Increased transmission would also result from parents not having to stay at home with their children, they say.

Researchers said getting pupils back to school was important - but more work was needed to keep the virus in check.

The government said plans were in place to ensure schools can fully reopen at the start of the new school year.

As first reported in June, the combined effect on pupils and parents would be enough to cause a second wave if there was no effective test-and-trace programme.

This would happen around December 2020 and would be twice as big as the first peak, unless the government took other actions such as reimposing lockdown.

"We are listening to the science"

Good post 2G. That sounds like a stock answer, a bit of shifty ventriloquism which implies "read my lips". Mat Hancock's head and eyes swivel.

Just added the Lancet link to the subject.

Oh yes i do keep forgetting that we are being guided by the science but what if our science differs from other country's who listen to their science also. Science is like statistic's and can be misread or misinterpreted- the common link here could be "mis",,,,,,,,? 🐿🌈

I read the Times, which today reports scientists from UCL saying that for the track & trace system to work, at least 75% of people with covid, & 70% of their contacts, need to be identified. In reality, the figures are 50% & 50%, yet the government insists the programme is working. I can’t post a link because the Times has a firewall.

Matt Hancock is bound to defend his friends Baroness Harding & Lord Bethell, having awarded them £m contracts to run the system.
