Good morning all,

It would be great if someone with this condition could describe their symptoms when resting, watching tv, going to sleep, etc. How is your breathing/ chest then? Thank you xxx M

Hi I have moderate emphysema. I normally have few problems. The only time I do is if I have a chest infection which is a fairly rare event. Obviously I avoid things that could effect my chest like certain cleaning products and smoke etc but I would say I am able to lead a fairly normal life as far as my chest goes. What particular problems are you having? Emphysema can effect people in different ways depending on the location so my experience may be different to yours.

Thank you Badbessie. I've got many but mainly is the feeling of constriction and not freely breathing when resting or watching tv... Tight chest, bloating stomach, chest discomfort, metallic taste in mouth, and obviously, difficult to sleep.

Good Morning, sometimes when we are resting and not distracted we can overthink our breathing and that can lead to feeling breathless, I am not saying that is what is happening with you but it can happen especially when first diagnosed. It might help to try some breathing exercises ( there are videos on You Tube). If the exercises don’t help and you feel like you are struggling to breath you need to call 111 or your GP for more advice.

I totally agree Tia - breathing is fine until I start thinking about it (or if anyone on TV has breathing probs, then I come out in sympathy - doh!)

I do fine unless I have a chest infection, which is rare these days. I agree about doing breathing exercises they do help a lot, but please don't overdo it. And if you are still struggling then have a chat with your GP. Have a great day and take care 😊 Bernadette xx xx 🌈
