Making face coverings mandatory in shops in England is being considered by the government to slow the spread of coronavirus, senior sources have said.Speaking in a Facebook Q&A video, Boris Johnson hinted at the change saying: "We are looking at ways of making sure that people really do have face coverings in shops."

Face coverings have been compulsory in shops in Scotland since 10 July.

And speaking on Friday Mr Johnson said "the balance of scientific opinion seems to have shifted more in favour of them than it was, and we're very keen to follow that".

"I don't think we are going to get to a world where we say everyone has to wear face coverings the whole time everywhere," he said, but added "We need to be stricter in insisting that people wear face coverings in confined spaces where they are meeting people they don't usually meet.

In Scotland masks are compulsory in shops and mandatory on public transport. What is the difference between compulsory and mandatory in this context? (Sorry, going off on a bit of a tangent here)

None, one and the same:

Thanks 2greys. When there already seems to be some confusion about regulations, it might be more helpful to stick to one word rather than trying to infer differences in rules 🤔 Though I don't know if it's the BBC or the Scottish government using those definitions.

As he is now thinking that people have to wear masks in confined spaces, Surely that should include all shopworkers . I haven't seen 1 wearing a mask.

He then adds that people should get back to work and not be working from home.

So people with indoor jobs eg office workers should then be wearing masks all day.

Surely it would be safer, if working from home is working for businesses, to

continue a while longer.

Boris may want normality but the world isnt and it will just cause a 2nd wave.

And as he didnt say it doesn't include those shielding til 1 Aug,as a reminder, employers that aren't happy with those shielding (mine included!) will then put pressure on people to return.

Not what you're looking for?
