During lockdown there has been a steady decline across the UK in worries about Covid-19. At the beginning, half of adults were worried about catching the virus and becoming seriously ill, and now just 35% are worried and only 15% are seriously worried, according to the ongoing study of over 90,000 adults carried out since the start of the coronavirus pandemic.
The ongoing study, which was launched in the week before lockdown, is funded by the Nuffield Foundation with additional support from Wellcome and UK Research and Innovation (UKRI). It is the UK’s largest study into how adults are feeling about the lockdown, government advice and overall wellbeing and mental health.
After reading the history of the 1918 flu. The book quoted an American source that stated that our worries are over and we should celebrate. The City had their parade and within days the virus had killed over 5000. Obviously those who are not worried do not understand how infectious this virus is. We do not yet have a a fully effective track and trace system nor a working app. By the Oxford study we still have a large daily infection rate. Basically we are stamping our feet in a mine field hoping that the world will not go bang.
I have these concerns as well. Even if the R value increases and lockdown measures are put into place again, people will be so blasé by then, I fear they will be ignored by too many next time, there were many examples of people taking the Micky last time. We might even see barbed wire strewn across beaches to keep the hordes at bay. Perhaps the military will be needed to patrol the streets as well.
