Hi , i was diagnosed with c.o.p.d in 2003 but since June 2017 I've had no medication which is a long story but for the past year and a half I've been coughing up large amounts of rusty coloured phlegm and can't lay down to sleep I have to sit up against the wall . I've been stranded here in Greece because of lies told by my now ex wife to keep me from returning to the UK to the dwp which caused my esa to be stopped .
There are tiny blood vessels in the lungs which can get damaged with coughing and bleed a little. If the traces of blood in the phlegm are only occasional and he's been coughing, it is probably nothing to be concerned about. However, if you have any concerns at all, give the British Lung Foundation nurse a call as she's a trained professional and will give good advice, whereas I'm just repeating what I've heard here.
