So my mom has severe copd thought of vic's to help her breathe as she has panick attach her breathing is so bad. She's almost 80 and normally very active. she's now on oxygen 24 7. I saw someone said not to use vic's if you're on oxygen because its flammable? If its rubbed into her skin how could that hurt her? Any help is appreciated. She's the best mom in the world, raised 9 kids

Vic's with oxygen??
Hi Betty, 😊👋
It is true, you cannot use petroleum based ointments or lotions in or around the nose, like vaseline, vicks or lip balm when on supplementary oxygen. Oxygen can react with these oily substances and can cause serious burns. Although oxygen itself is not flammable, and will not by itself explode, it excellerates burning and ignites easily when in contact with petroleum.
Your mum sounds like a very special lady.😁 Best wishes to you both.

Hi Caspiana,
I was just wondering if she could rub it on her chest?
I was thinking of that too actually Troilus . I cannot in good conscience say it's safe 👋 to be honest. If her oxygen came off or she took it off for a minute, I cant (neither can anyone) say it won't go near her chest area. All I can really say with certainty is what I said in my first answer. After that it's up to Betty and her mum to decide if that's a risk they want to take. xx 😊👋👍
Not sure what the active ingredient in Vicks is but if its menthol you can buy it from a pharmacist - I think. P
Just wanted to say what a special lady your mum must be. She has my total admiration for raising nine children.
Take good care of her.
Best wishes

My doctor recommends Olbas Oil, you can put a few drops on a handkerchief or in a steam inhalation.
Hi, it’s anything with petroleum we’re to avoid. I’m using the baby version of olbas oil & haven’t caught fire yet- seriously though I’m working on the principal if it’s ok for babies it should be ok & so far so good.
