I have mild emphysema and it was getting worse but after some tests they discovered i was hyperventalating. They suggested using diafram breathing but not sure. I try pursed lips. Any ideas

Some inhalers have caused me to Hyperventilate , if you have a new inhaler and the symptoms have started since taking it, maybe your Dr could look into if the Inhaler has caused the symptoms.

Practice gentle, gentle nose breathing with a relaxed torso and diaphragm....relax as much as you can . Nose breathe to warm and filter the air, and to help over breathing.

Sit comfortably upright, relaxed.....put one hand upper chest, one hand lower.....the lower hand should move more than the upper . Relax your belly , lower your shoulders.

I have just bought a new book on over breathing or hyperventilation ....still reading it . It emphasises gentle nose breathing .

Meditating helps me relax and slow breathing too.

Good posture ....I know I spend too long hunched over I pad .

Exercise or walking with mouth closed as much as possible....stop if overdoing it, get control of breath then carry on.

I used to hyperventilate too, and found out on the PR course. Now I run a singing for lung health group which teaches diaphragm breathing. Check out singing groups in your area on the BLF website, or look up some singing exercises for the diaphragm on You Tube.

The easiest exercise to start working the diaphragm is to lie flat on your back on the floor or your bed with a heavy book on your stomach, and try to raise it and make it fall just by breathing.

All the best.
