I have severe Copd and have just fought two viral infections and a severe exacerbation. Hospitalised and oxygen dependent for 24 hours. So have been unwell on and off for 10 weeks .... so advice is wash hands .... I always do, but still got a viral infection. Twice!! Without trying to frighten or upset anyone ... I’m terrified to be honest!! Can’t think of anything else. I’m 60 this year and after seeing the stats it would seem I’m doomed!! Am I the only one that feels this way???
Its important to avoid contact with people who may be infected with a cold or a flu virus at any time, additionally importantant now because of the coronavirus. I do many things to avoid infection and I too still get them. Even going to corner shop is difficult so we can just order food delivered instead of risking the crowds.
I find contact with children also dodgy, avoid parties, crowds, large gatherings etc but do keep washing your hands and avoid exposure to bugs wherever possible.
My problem is if I get a lung infection and have to take prednisolone that spikes my blood glucose to excessively high levels so I am stuffed if I then come into contact with a covid infected person.
But I'm not dwelling on it. In June I hope to go to my niece's Wedding but I will just have to weigh up the risks of attending and travelling on public transport when the time comes.
It hasn't happened till it happens, and it may never happen (being infected with covid19) so just keep that in mind and try not to draw in the doomed energy too much.
We do not let anyone visit who has a cold or anyone who has had one within 2 weeks. It is tough when you can't visit grandchildren, but it has to be. Good luck to all.
I try not to be but I am terrified. Likewise just getting over a horrid viral infection and my breathing is still far from right. I have severe anxiety around my breathing anyway and this is sending it off the scale. I wish I could be reasonable but I just can’t
All the media has send people into panic attacks they should consider people who suffer from anxiety and how will affect them I hope you are feeling ok try not to worry remember no matter wh we do whatever god has written will be so please try doing breathing exercise don’t read or watch the news I remember once I was abroad there was a war and on tv they were exaggerating everything
Thank you, I know you’re right. My head is causing me more breathing issues than my lungs right now. I’m off to start sewing a dress to distract me. Funny how my breathing is ok when I don’t think about it 🙄. As you say, what will be will be.
Eat well, exercise as much as you can, take good supplements Vit C and D3 and wash hands- so many of us in the same position, try not to worry - viruses hate sunlight and fluorescent light apparently so let’s hope Spring springs soon! X
Hi, yes, I'm scared too, and some people think I'm over the top, but I would sooner be safe than sorry. I, too, have lung conditions and am in the wrong age bracket - 75. I'm isolating myself, told all my family not to call, especially children as they are super spenders. I'd sooner do this for a couple of months than worry constantly. I have cancelled appointments at hospital & spoken to my consultant who has changed my appointment. Feel for you, but do the sensible things to help you get through this, sounds like you've had a terrible time, look after yourself, take care, xx
I was diagnosed COPD Emphysema 14 years ago (stopped smoking) then 4 years ago I spent 19 ays in a coma with Virul pnuemonia and flu and respiratory failure. Since then I have washed my hands done all the exercises even joining a friday class. Eaten all the right foods but still along the way I have suffered infections and at Xmas last I had 2 heart attacks and bacterial pnuemonia. Point I am trying to make is I do what I can to help myself and try to stay in each day because I have no idea what tomorrow may bring. I am 73 this month and life seems to get narrower as time passes but there is always something in each day which is a positive and for which \i can be grateful. Try not to worry and find a way to refocus if neccessary. Wishing you all the best.
No you are not alone, many people are starting to avoid crowds ectand staying home if any viruses are mentioned. Not to get to panicky but flu and several other things are viruses. And I am sure we on this site are aware of the risk in our health situation. You are at a low immune level so take care ,do what ever is best for you to try and remain as well as possible.
I'm 72 yrs young and have sever COPD and sever ASTHMA. I'm not ready to give up, I'm going down fighting. Exercise for life . Plus my doctor has me on Spiriva for my COPD and Symbicort for my ASTHMA that and my exercise makes me feel I dont have the illness. Am thankfull for the doctor I have and thankful for God who comforts me on my journey.
Thank you for positive attitude we all need to be like you
Thank you everyone. Really positive vibe .... so glad I voiced my fears on here. 😊making me feel brave just going to remind myself of the great advice and shared stories x
no yr not alone i have copd i've been struggling since december and was hospitalised in january, i'm 67 and also diabetic and i'm terrified to the point of not wanting to leave home
My dear dad has COPD and I regularly wrap and re-wrap him in cotton wool. I just wanted to remind people that as well as washing hands, you can also use antibacterial hand gels and there are also wipes and cleaners available that you can use around your environment that will help keep the bugs at bay. I know nothing guarantees you won’t get sick but there are a few things out there that you can add to help minimise your exposure.
I work for a medical product distributor who supply the NHS (this is not a sales pitch) our wipes and hand gels have just been lab tested and certified to kill Corona. So products are available that specifically kill covid 19.
Sadly a lot of the public are irresponsible and don’t know how to wash their hands correctly and some are putting others at risk by going out or to work when they are unwell. There are machines which show with ultra violet lights where people miss cleaning their hands properly. I have been wearing gloves when going out and not standing too near other people or in crowds. The best thing to do is to go online or contact 111 if you feel have any of the symptoms and insist on being swabbed. Having been at local GP surgery this week was not happy at how many of the other patients thought it was a joke having to use hand sanitiser when asked by the receptionist. The problem was she wasn’t at the desk all the time.
